Sales of Objective-C books are reportedly up, presumably to would-be iPhone developers. It's a shame, then, that so much of the truly awesome stuff on the iPhone isn't accessible from Obj-C.
Mid-January, yet another interesting software project was introduced by the Google labs: the Google Quick Search Box. Today is the Mac's 25th birthday. Watching this YouTube video of Steve Jobs pulling it out of the bag in 1984, I was amused to see how sound has been part of this computer from the beginning. The speech synthesizer comes in around 2:51. It sounds like FM synthesis; anyone have more details?

Apple CEO Steve Jobs stood in front of a sold out crowd at Apple's WWDC and told them that Apple is about to release phones that are better than the ones in their pocket and will cost half of what theirs cost. The developers responded with sustained enthusiastic applause. That reaction makes perfect sense.
