Building a Business on Open Source Distributed Computing: OSCON 2009 - ...

The end of "scale-up" computing is near. The coming wave of web-scale data is too big to justify exponentially increasing hardware costs for decreasing returns. Apache's "Cloud Stack" (Hadoop, Lucene, HBase, etc) is enabling Visible Technologies to move from a non-scalable MS-exclusive platform to a large cluster processing millions of pieces of content a day.Here's what we learned.

Richard Benham is the Executive Director of the Elections by the People Foundation, Inc. As an attorney in Tallahassee, Florida he has been involved in numerous election law matters. Serving as General Counsel for Ion Sancho, Supervisor of Elections for Leon County, Mr. Benham recognized the threats posed by closed source proprietary elections systems to the integrity, validity, and voter confidence in our elections. Before entering the practice of law, Mr. Benham held many technical and business roles in the information technology industry. He co-founded a successful application software business, worked with open system technologies at a major hardware vendor, and led the health and human services division of a mid-sized system integration concern. He currently serves on the adjunct faculty of the Florida State University College of Law.

Marc Lindsey is a partner in the law firm of Levine, Blaszak, Block & Boothby, LLP, where he practices technology law. For over 10 years, he has advised companies and large municipalities on a variety of information technology, e-Business, managed services, software, and custom system design and development legal matters. Mr. Lindsey assisted the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission (the “TLC”) in 2005 with the creation and implementation of the NYC taxicab technology enhancements program. Under the program, the TLC fostered the development and deployment of industry leading custom taxicab technology solutions – which included location tracking systems – in all NYC taxicabs.

Atsushi Shionozaki received his PhD in Computer Science from Keio University in 1995. He joined Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc. (Sony CSL) in Tokyo focusing on Internet protocol research. In 2000, he joined Stanford Networking Research Center as a reseacher in residence representing Sony. After returning to Sony CSL in Tokyo in 2004, he started working on the wireless LAN locationware platform PlaceEngine with other lab members.
