He suggests turning libraries into bookstores, compensating publishers for each loan (interestingly, some of the first circulating libraries were established by publishers and booksellers precisely to have a rental trade). I'm wary of the effort to profit from every use of a work, though. I'd rather see libraries limit simultaneous access to in-copyright materials if there's no negotiated license opening access to more. Unlike the author, I don't see this as a situation that justifies DRM, whose poison extends past the term of copyright. Flickr had to add the category, which differs from "No Known Copyright", and it's something that all sharing sites will need to consider if they are going to offer their service to the Government.</li></ol></p>

Any detail can be meaningful: what time of day you buy things, or the<br />
quality of the objects you choose.</p>

<p>The way credit collectors use psychology reminds me of CIA<br />
interogators (without the physical aspects of pressure). In fact,<br />
they're probably more effective than CIA interogators because they<br />
stick to the basic insight that kindness elicits more cooperation than<br />
threats.</p>
<p>
<p>So who gave them permission to use our purchase information against<br />
us? What law could possibly address this kind of power play?</p>
<p>
<p>There's another disturbing aspect to the data mining: it treats us<br />
all as examples of a pattern rather than as individuals.<br />

There's a long-time debate between those who advocate for semantic markup, and those who believe that machine learning will eventually get us to the holy grail of a Semantic Web, one in which computer programs actually understand the meaning of what they see and read. Google has of course been the great proof point of the power of machine learning algorithms. Earlier this week, Google made a nod to the other side of the debate, introducing a feature that they call "Rich Snippets." Basically, if you mark up pages with certain microformats ( and soon, with RDFa), Google will take this data into account, and will provide enhanced snippets in the search results.

Supported microformats in the first release include those for people and for reviews. <br />

Rich snippets could be a turning point for the Semantic Web, since, for the first time, they create a powerful economic motivation for semantic markup. Google has told us that rich snippets significantly enhance click-through rates. That means that anyone who has been doing SEO is now going to have to add microformats and RDFa to their toolkit.<br />
<p><br />
Historically, the biggest block to the Semantic Web has been the lack of a killer app that would drive widespread adoption. There was always a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem, in which users would need to do a lot of work to mark up the data for the benefit of others before getting much of a payoff themselves. But as Dan Bricklin remarked so insightfully in his 2000 paper on Napster, <a href=https://www.bricklin.com/cornucopia.htm>The Cornucopia of the Commons</a>, the most powerful online dynamics are released not by appeals to volunteerism, but by self-interest:<br />

(Aside: <a href=https://twitter.com/akumar>@akumar</a>, this is the answer to <a href=https://twitter.com/akumar/statuses/1776298307>your question on Twitter</a> about why<a id="aptureLink_UXREbg8qQd" href="https://radar.oreilly.com/2009/05/google-announces-support-for-m.html"> in writing up this announcement</a> we didn't make more of Yahoo!'s prior support for <a id="aptureLink_RXOcg3dblD" href="https://developer.yahoo.com/searchmonkey/smguide/semantic_web.html">microformats in searchmonkey</a>. You guys did pioneering work, but Google has the market power to actually get people to pay attention.)<br />

What I also find interesting about the announcement is the blurring line between machine learning and semantic markup. <br />
<p><br />
Machine learning isn't just brute force analysis of unstructured data. In fact, while Google is famous as a machine-learning company, their initial breakthrough with <a id="aptureLink_EewrsAZMrX" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pagerank">pagerank</a> was based on the realization that there was hidden metadata in the link structure of the web that could be used to improve search results. It was precisely their departure from previous brute force methods that gave them some of their initial success. Since then, they have been diligent in developing countless other algorithms based on regular features of the data, and in particular regular associations between data sets that routinely appear together - implied metadata, so to speak. <br />
<p><br />
So, for example, people are associated with addresses, with dates, with companies, with other people, with documents, with pictures and videos. Those associations may be made explicitly, via tags or true structured markup, but given a large enough data set, they can be extracted automatically. Jeff Jonas calls this process "<a id="aptureLink_Q687mHYdeC" href="https://jeffjonas.typepad.com/jeff_jonas/2006/08/accumulating_co.html">context accumulation</a>." It's the way that our own brains operate: over time, we make associations between parallel data streams, each of which informs us about the other. Semantic labeling (via language) is only one of many of those data streams. We may see someone and not remember their name; we may remember the name but not the face that goes with it. We might connect the two given the additional information that we met at such and such conference three years ago.<br />
<p><br />
Google is in the business of making these associations, finding pages that are about the same thing, and they use every available handle to help them do it. Seen in this way, SEO is already a kind of semantic markup, in which self-interested humans try to add information to pages to enhance their discoverability and ranking by Google. What the <a href=https://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/05/introducing-rich-snippets.html>Rich Snippets announcement</a> does is tell webmasters and SEO professionals a new way to add structure to their markup.<br />
<p><br />
The problem with explicit metadata like this is that it's liable to gaming. But more dangerously, it generally only captures what we already know. By contrast, implicit metadata can surprise us, giving us new insight into the world. Consider Flickr's <a href=https://code.flickr.com/blog/2009/01/12/living-in-the-donut-hole/>maps created by geotagged photos</a>, which show the real boundaries of where people go in cities and what they do there. Here, the metadata may be added explicitly by humans, but it is increasingly added automatically by the camera itself. (The most powerful <a href=https://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/oreilly/tim/articles/architecture_of_participation.html>architecture of participation</a> is one in which data is provided by default, without the user even knowing he or she is doing it.)<br />
<p><br />
Google's <a href=https://www.google.org/flutrends/>Flu Trends</a> is another great example. By mining its search database (what John Battelle calls "<a href=https://battellemedia.com/archives/000063.php>the database of intentions</a>") for searches about flu symptoms, Google is able to generate maps of likely clusters of infection. Or look at Jer Thorp's fascinating project announced just the other day, <a href=https://blog.blprnt.com/blog/blprnt/just-landed-processing-twitter-metacarta-hidden-data>Just Landed: Processing, Twitter, MetaCarta & Hidden Data</a>. Jer simulated the possible spread of swine flu built by extracting the string "Just landed in..." from Twitter. Since Twitter profiles include a location, and the object of the phrase above is also likely to be a location, he was able to create the following visualization of travel patterns:<br />

This is where the rubber meets the road of collective intelligence. I'm a big fan of structured markup, but I remain convinced that even more important is to discover new metadata that is produced, as Wallace Stevens so memorably said, "<a href=https://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/oreilly/tim/articles/favebooks_0705.html>merely in living as and where we live</a>." <br />
<p><br />
P.S. There's some small irony that in its first steps towards requesting explicit structured data from webmasters, Google is specifying the vocabularies that can be used for its Rich Snippets rather than mining the structured data formats that already exist on the web. It would be more "googlish" (in the machine learning sense I've outlined above) to recognize and use them all, rather than asking webmasters to adopt a new format developed by Google. There's an interesting <a href=https://iandavis.com/blog/2009/05/googles-rdfa-a-damp-squib>debate about this irony</a> over on Ian Davis' blog. I expect there to be a lot more debate in the weeks to come.</p>

Games comprise a sizable chunk of app revenues in all three platforms and recent stories suggest that 2009 has been a great year for developers. The substantial revenue generated by popular Facebook (and Myspace) apps has been the subject of articles in <a href="https://venturebeat.com/2009/05/08/facebook-platform-developers-could-see-500m-in-revenue-this-year/">VentureBeat</a>, <a href="https://www.techcrunch.com/2009/03/06/some-indie-facebook-developers-pulling-in-over-700000-a-month/">TechCrunch</a>, and <a href="https://www.insidefacebook.com/2009/04/14/facebook-platform-payment-providers-report-strong-growth-in-q1/">Inside Facebook</a>. There have also been recent estimates for the revenue generated by iPhone apps (see <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/some-iphone-apps-making-money-from-ads-2009-5">here</a> and <a href="https://www.slideshare.net/pinchmedia/iphone-appstore-secrets-pinch-media">here</a>). Game developers in particular are benefiting from having a multitude of platforms: Games are the largest iTunes category, and the second largest category in both Facebook and Myspace. In addition, 4 of the top 10 most successful Facebook app providers are Game developers.<br />

<p>
With the 2-year anniversary of Facebook's platform a few weeks away, I've put together an overview of the current state of Facebook and Myspace apps. At a time when iTunes attracts most of the media coverage, the Facebook & Myspace (particularly Facebook) platforms are quietly producing apps and developers with impressive usage numbers. Over the past week, there were more than 29,000 app sellers on the Facebook platform. Over 2% of those sellers released apps with at least 100,000 combined active users. Close to 700 different Facebook apps had at least 100,000 <em>active</em> users over the last month. Over the past month, 49,000 Facebook apps had <em>at least 50</em> active users:

Usage numbers are important because advertising is a popular source of revenue for many Facebook, Myspace, and iPhone apps. Some Facebook and Myspace apps (especially Games) also rely on <em>points</em> systems and virtual items to generate revenue -- both of which benefit from high usage numbers. On the first page of results was a list of shops <em>in my neighborhood</em> that sell that thing (in our pretend example, baseball card trading stores). The specificity of the local results was quite good. Now, I know full well that my IP address identifies my location all too accurately, and that Google and many other sites track that information -- and I've known that for a long time. Nonetheless, seeing my neighborhood right there in the search results made me want to never use any Google site again. Call it "uncanny valley" or "rubbing your face in it" or whatever you want -- it was just too close to home in the most literal sense. I'm off trying <a href="https://search.yahoo.com/">Yahoo Search</a> as an alternative -- not that I have any reason to believe Yahoo treats such data any differently, but simply because having alternatives is a good thing. (For the record, I'm a noted privacy freak and I don't pretend to speak for anyone else on this topic. I know that resistance is futile. I continue to believe that there is a great divide on sensitivity about privacy -- you've either had your identity stolen or been stalked or had some great intrusion you couldn't fend off, or you haven't. I'm in the former camp and it colors the way I view and think about privacy online. It makes me indescribably sad to see how clearly I and others in my camp are losing this battle.)</li>
<p><li>I'd really like to end up on <a href="https://wrongtomorrow.com/">Wrong Tomorrow</a> for predicting that the iPhone OS will be dominant for the next decade. Who knows? Prediction is completely impossible, which is one of the things that makes life fun. The tech industry seems particularly predictable, though, in that it just keeps acting in waves. The iPhone OS seems to be playing its cards right. Go ahead, commenters, freak out like you did the last time I said this. :)</li></p>
<p><li>I noted to a friend the other day (while encouraging him to go work there) that I measured Twitter's value by seeing Tweetie (an awesome iPhone Twitter client) ascend to one of the four apps in the bottom bar of my iPhone. Those bottom bar apps are the ones I use all the time (the others being the phone, SMS, and email apps). Tweetie replaced Safari, the web browser, which is pretty amazing as a symbolic shift. No other third-party app -- including my <em>own company's</em> app -- has made it into the bottom bar for me. Who says Twitter isn't valuable?</li></p>
<p><li>In contrast, using Twitter makes Facebook like watching repeats on local TV when you're home sick. I really hope the automated and out-of-control cross-posting comes to an end soon. Facebook wins for posting private messages and having inline replies; Twitter wins by letting you see the data some way other than through the official orifice (desktop clients, iPhone apps, SMS, etc). I would accept separate message streams for different types of data; or the death of Facebook in my friend group -- whatever. Unfortunately I doubt I'll get either wish.</li><br />

Google Engineering Explains Microformat Support in Searches

While the initial launch will be limited to a specific set of partners (including LinkedIn, Yelp and CNet reviews), the intent is that very quickly, anyone who marks their pages up with the appropriate microformat data will be able to make their information understandable by Google. This technology would allow you to explicitly search, for example, for only printers that had an average customer review of 3 stars or higher. Initial support will include things such as:<br />

We talked this morning with Othar Hansson and RV Guha, two of the Google engineers responsible for the new functionality, and you can listen to them discuss it in this exclusive O'Reilly interview.</p>
<p><br />
<b><b>JAMES TURNER:</b></b> Why don't you guys start by introducing yourselves? </p>
<p><b>OTHAR HANSSON:</b> Sure. I'm Othar Hansson: and I'm a tech lead on this project. And I'm in Google's Search UI Group. </p>
<p><b>RV GUHA:</b> My name is Guha. I'm an engineer at Google and I do stuff across the board. </p>
<p><b>JT:</b> So can you describe briefly, to start off, exactly what it is you're releasing today? </p>
<p><b>RVG:</b> Okay. We are asking webmasters who have pieces of data like reviews or people profiles, and in an experimental form, things like information about organizations and products, to put the structure data representing the content on the webpage in a machine-understandable form on the webpage. Typically, what happens is that if you take a website and having created opinions, I can talk about the context of opinions. You would typically have a database in the back-end which has lots of information about products. People write reviews about them. And you get information such as the number of reviews, the average rating of the reviews, the price of the product, who sells it, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. It's stored in a structured database in your back-end. You then use some scripts to format it into HTML as per the site's design. Now going from the structured data to the HTML is quite straight-forward. But going from the HTML back to the structured data in a fashion which works across sites is very, very, very hard. Now our search engine doesn't -- it's very difficult for a search engine to understand -- to sort of get back the structured data for all of the sites. Now if it were to understand that, if it were to understand that this is a review site where the product being reviewed is such and such and it has 30 reviews with an average rating of 3.2 and so on and so forth, we could do a better job of the search. In particular, we could do a better job of presenting the two or three lines of text that appeared as part of the search result so that the user has a better idea of what to expect on that page. And from our experiments, it seemed that giving the user a better idea of what to expect on the page increases the click-through rate on the search results. So if the webmasters do` this, it's really good for them. They get more traffic. It's good for users because they have a better idea of what to expect on the page. And, overall, it's good for the web. </p>
<p><b>JT:</b> So in some ways, that's in the same way that right now for certain sites, you'll give the internal structure of the site as part of the search result or for shopping results, you'll give price ranges and things like this. This is just, again, enriching and providing more structured -- more than just a snippet, giving more of a structured display of the information on that page? </p>
<p><b>RVG:</b> Yes. If we have a structured data, we can do lots of things. We're starting off by improving the snippets. It's an absolute no-brainer. It seems to be helping everybody. And, as you know us, we keep playing it on with different ideas and different things. As structured data becomes more prevalent, there's a ton of ideas, both inside Google and outside Google, on how you might improve search. </p>
<p><b>JT:</b> Right. So, for example, you might be able to -- if you were looking for reviews, you could say where the review value is greater than three stars. </p>
<p><b>RVG:</b> Absolutely. Or then another example, there are lots of John Smiths in the world. And my advisor's favorite example, there's lots of McCarthy's in the world. And if you search for McCarthy, the page that you get is often pages that you get about John McCarthy, the computer scientist, mixed up with pages about McCarthy who was a politician in the '50s and '60s. Now if the pages about John McCarthy and the other McCarthy were to be somehow using something like RDFa, specify that I'm about that McCarthy whose homepage is at cs.stanford.edu/jmc, then as part of the search, we could come back and say, "Which John McCarthy did you mean?" And you can say, "Oh, yeah, I meant the guy from Stanford." And that makes life a lot easier for users. </p>
<p><b>JT:</b> Right. So, again, part of the idea would be that if you were doing eventually a search, you could do more like a SQL parameterized search rather than a free text search? </p>
<p><b>RVG:</b> But the users will never see SQL. </p>
<p><b>JT:</b> Right. But that same idea of parameter value pairs. </p>
<p><b>RVG:</b> You get more precision with structured data queries. There's not just SQL. There's other languages as well. But, in general, you get more precession with the structure data query. You get to slice and dice the data in many different ways. If we had a better understanding of the data that is contained in the pages, we would be able to provide these kinds of services to our users. </p>
<p><b>JT:</b> Now some of the initial things I've seen about this talk a lot about microformats. What is the range of microformats that you believe that you will eventually be looking at here? </p>
<p><b>RVG:</b> So there's this big issue having to deal with the issue of microformats with RDFa and things like that. And so after thinking about it, when we went inside the company, we went round and round and round and round. There were people who wanted to support microformats. There were people who wanted to support RDFa. There were people who thought that we should come up with our own format. In the end, we decided that the issue is we have to support multiple encodings and that the real issue, if you will, or one of the big issues is not so much the format that is used but the vocabulary. It's really important that everybody, as far as possible, use the same vocabulary. So Google is essentially going to be making an investment in sort of hosting a vocabulary that maybe is Google Services. It's not just Google.com search, but Custom's search engine is also going to be using this. We're hopeful that other web services from other companies will also use this vocabulary. And we're not going to do this all by ourselves. As it is, we are drawing from several sources. We're drawing from microformats. We're drawing from vCard. And there are other places that you will see. And there's other people who know more about their topics than we could possibly know. And we'll draw on all of these things. So to come back and answer your question, we hope that the scope of this will be substantially more than the scope of all the particular data types that work today by microformats. </p>
<p><b>JT:</b> If you take this to its logical conclusion, you would think that everywhere you had a location, you would use a microformat for a location so you could search on geographic information. Every place you had a person's name, you would embed a microformat with that. It strikes me that for the website author, until there are tools available to really help them do that, that could be quite a workload. </p>
<p><b>RVG:</b> We agree. So we're hoping the tools will evolve. There are only two that are evolving that are beginning to support some of these formats like RDFa. We're hoping there's an 80/20 rule over here which is that by doing some little work, you can get a lot of the bang for the buck. And I mean there's already thousands of sites which support the structure called [inaudible]. Even Whitehouse.gov supports RDFa already. And so we are expecting wireless will be a little bit more work. It will not be too much more work. And for websites that are driven on databases, it's a one-time change mapping their schema into the vocabulary and just outputting it and then adding it to their --</p>
<p><b>OH:</b>And on the side of small sites, I mean if you consider the Google Custom Search angle, imagine a small site that sells jewelry and they have 30 different jewelry designs. There's probably no database developer associated with this company. So the easiest way for them to actually build a database is to output their HTML with the structure data in it and then let Google or other search engines do the sort of SQL-like queries that you mentioned. You know, "I want to look for necklaces that have gold and are $200 or less." It's actually easier to mark-up the data and then outsource the slicing and dicing to search engines as opposed to having to build up all of that infrastructure in a small setting. So it's work, yes. But, on the other hand, it potentially replaces work that's either not getting done or it's even more difficult for a small company. </p>
<p><b>JT:</b> You've described the advantages that will be there for content producers in terms of higher click-through rates by people who see more precise and helpful data. And you can kind of conceptually understand what the advantages would be to the user, but in terms of the experience, what is it going to look like to someone doing a Google -- would it leap off at them that it's a different experience than it was? </p>
<p><b>OH:</b> No. [Laughter] It will not be popups.</p>
<p><b>JT:</b> Yeah. I didn't mean leap off like that; I meant will really catch their eye. </p>
<p><b>OH:</b>I think it's noticeable enough. I mean one of the design challenges is to not create an arms race among the search results to which one can be flashiest because that actually hurts the user. It makes it harder to scan the page and harder to figure out which result they want to click on. So our design is fairly subtle. </p>
<p><b>RVG:</b> It's not so subtle that you don't notice it. It's there. It doesn't detract from the experience. And, as you know, we do lots and lots of experiments. From our experiments, it shows that it makes a substantial difference. </p>
<p><b>OH:</b>Yeah.</p>
<p><b>JT:</b> Now you're rolling out with a few initial partners. And I'd like it if you could mention who they are and what the best ways that a user could see this quickly, but also, for the rest of the world, if I were to mark up my site today, how likely is it that it's going to start to show up in this new form in Google any time soon? And, also, just to totally overload this question, a site that has this data, it may be much more either ephemeral or frequently updated data, are you going to make any effort to crawl those sites a little more aggressively? </p>
<p><b>OH:</b> So anyway, so you should check the press materials later today for the official list of partners. But they include Yelp and CNET and LinkedIn, which are reasonably easy to come up with a query that will show data for them. And it's reviews on CNET. It's not all the content on CNET. How quickly will sites get in here? Well, so we're starting this off with reviews and people, primarily. So a site that has that kind of content, it's going to be a lot easier for them to get involved. We have a form for them to express interest. We're then going to take a look and see -- work with them, I guess, to mark up their data. </p>
<p><b>RVG:</b> At a higher level, in a fairly short order, we would like it -- there is no set of partners. You don't have to work with us. You don't have to tell us. You just have to follow our basic guidelines like that Google already specifies, like no cloaking. That is that you tell the crawler exactly the same data that you would give the user. If you follow these kinds of rules and you're not spam, you should show up. However, we're being kind of careful in rolling this out because we know that pretty much anything we do, there are, unfortunately, elements on the web who will try and somehow figure out an angle to exploit it and this and that and so on and so forth. But you shouldn't need to work with us to be a participant in the near future. </p>
<p><b>OH:</b>Yeah. So the initial phase is a little different because of that concern, but in the end, we're basically going to notice this on websites and then start. </p>
<p><b>RVG:</b> Yeah. And there's another interesting aspect of the CSE angle, which is that for a Custom Search Engine, you use Google's infrastructure to run a search engine on your site. And there are several prominent websites like the New York Times and About.com who use Custom Search to power their homepage search. So some of these people have wanted to extend the functionality for a long time, except they want to be able to define their own vocabulary, their own X, Y and Z. So clearly, we cannot be sort of gatekeepers in the vocabulary. We cannot expect microformats or anybody to be gatekeepers in their vocabulary. And let me give you kind of an extreme, not an extreme, but an example, if you go to unitedway.org's homepage, right, that is liveunited.org, they actually use a Custom Search Engine on their homepage. They have all kinds of things that they probably want to mark up there. And it's searchable with the United Way organizations. There's about 900 United Way organizations across the world for the different areas and so on and so forth. We cannot be expected, nor microformats.org or any one organization be expected to come up with the vocabulary for all domains. So they should be, as users of Custom Search Engine, be able to mark up their pages with structured data vocabulary that they come up with, hopefully in collaboration with that community and maybe even in collaboration with us and use that to augment and improve the search experience on their own site. What this means is that -- I mean there's a huge number, hundreds of thousands of sites now which are using Custom Search Engine. And these guys can all go and start creating, marking up their pages and realize the benefits of this mark-up. And then our crawler will go pick up this mark-up and see which vocabularies are getting traction. And then work with those communities to incorporate them back into something that is recognized and used on Google.com itself. So what we're trying to do is create an ecosystem where there is demand for the structured data in all steps of the way. We're not going and telling people, "You should do this because it's a good thing to do and it's motherhood and apple pie." There is demand for it. You do it; you get a bang for the buck. Not just that, and that's not the end of it. You'll see which ones are getting traction and then ratchet it up one level by giving recognition to those on Google.com. </p>
<p><b>JT:</b> That leads to one other question I had which is that some of the places that come to mind immediately that it would be really nice to have this kind of data, especially review data, are things, for example, like Amazon which has a very extensive review database. Or, for example, if I was searching and I got eBay results, I'd love to have the seller rating of the seller in there. Those guys obviously have their own agendas. Do you think we're going to see that kind of data available? </p>
<p><b>RVG:</b> I think you're going to have different partners have different kinds of philosophies. Let me actually give you an anecdote from about ten years ago. When Eckart Walter and I were doing RSS at Netscape, initially most of the big publishers said, "There's no way on earth we're going to give you our headline because the most valuable stuff, we want users to come to our own webpage and use it." But some publishers said, "Fine, we'll give it to you." Then about two or three weeks after we launched, we had some very interesting partners. We had the Mormon Church provide its first RSS feed. We had small sites like Cricketforum.com, which is a cricket site provide its RSS feed. And these people said, "Look, people don't set us as a homepage. If we can somehow get more traffic, more attention by giving away some of our data, that would be good." Now, of course, you have everybody providing RSS feeds and realizing that doing so actually encourages people to come to their site. So I don't know what Amazon and eBay in particular are going to do. But I do believe that there will be some people who are sort of more advanced in their thinking and understand what's happened. And there are some people who will be less so. </p>

<p>On Tuesday, Google <a href="https://google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=99170">introduced a feature called Rich Snippets</a> which provides users with a convenient summary of a search result at a glance. They have been experimenting with microformats and RDFa, and are officially introducing the feature and allowing more sites to participate. While the Google announcement makes it clear that this technology is being phased in over time making no guarantee that your site's RDFa or microformats will be parsed, Google has given us a glimpse of the future of indexing. Read this article to find out about the underlying technology and how you can prepare you own content to work with this emerging technology.</p>
<h3>What is RDFa?</h3>
<p>While Google's announcement today focuses on microformats they will soon release support for RDFa. From the W3C <a href="https://www.w3.org/TR/rdfa-syntax/">RDFa in XHTML Specification</a>:</p>
<blockquote>The current Web is primarily made up of an enormous number of documents that have been created using HTML. These documents contain significant amounts of structured data, which is largely unavailable to tools and applications. When publishers can express this data more completely, and when tools can read it, a new world of user functionality becomes available, letting users transfer structured data between applications and web sites, and allowing browsing applications to improve the user experience: an event on a web page can be directly imported into a user's desktop calendar; a license on a document can be detected so that users can be informed of their rights automatically; a photo's creator, camera setting information, resolution, location and topic can be published as easily as the original photo itself, enabling structured search and sharing.</blockquote>
<p>Let's take a quick look at a review from Amazon, and see how it would be marked up with RDFa to provide more information for Rich Snippets. First, here's a review from the Amazon site:</p>

<h3>Analysis</h3>
<p>While the Semantic Web has been around for years, it has yet to live up to the audacious promises that heralded its introduction to the world. What is the Semantic Web? Here's the <a id="aptureLink_Q2xNuSqOq6" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semantic%20Web">definition from Wikipedia</a> in case you need a refresher:</p>
<blockquote>Humans are capable of using the Web to carry out tasks such as finding the Finnish word for "monkey", reserving a library book, and searching for a low price for a DVD. However, a computer cannot accomplish the same tasks without human direction because web pages are designed to be read by people, not machines. The semantic web is a vision of information that is understandable by computers, so that they can perform more of the tedious work involved in finding, sharing, and combining information on the web.</blockquote>
<p>In short, the Semantic Web is about more "meaningful" content. We've perfected the art of scanning text and creating massive distributed indexes that produce highly relevant search results, but when you type in "Swine Flu" you are really still dealing with an inefficient indexing approach that doesn't know about the meaning of the text being parsed and indexed. Moving toward the Semantic Web will allow our searching technologies to become more intelligent and will set the stage for the next revolution in which computing systems can become more aware of the "meaningfulness of data".</p>
<p>We've already seen a shift toward "semantic search": Google has already been augmenting search results with Google Maps, limited catalog searches, and more recent entries into the search market such as Amazon's A9 and the yet to be released Wolfram Alpha differentiate themselves by the structured data and content that can be extracted from a search result. We have yet to a see a compelling reason for web masters to place RDFa or microformats into a site to enable this semantic data to be mined until today, until Google provided a social incentive for site designers. This shift toward semantic markup promises to disrupt existing SEO approaches which are built atop the platform Google provides.</p>
<p>With Google in the game, it now becomes an imperative, sites that want to be listed in search results with Rich Snippets will need to think about RDFa and microformats. Tools that have been designed to present person and review data will now output RDFa and microformat markup compatible with Google by default. Blogging systems like Moveable Type or Wordpress, ecommerce tools like Magento, content management tools like Alfresco and Drupal will, very quickly, adopt the formats supported by Google, and in five years time, we won't be able to imagine a web that wasn't being supported by semantic markup. We think reminisce about the days when search results were produced by ad-hoc text processing technologies unsupported by meaningful data. The search result you are used to today will seem quaint in comparison to the rich data-centric experience of the emerging Semantic Web.</p>

<p><b>UPDATE (3:52PM):</b> We've had some response about failing to mention Yahoo's <a href="https://developer.yahoo.com/searchmonkey/">SearchMonkey</a> which also supports RDFa and Microformats. Google is certainly not the first search engine to support RDFa and Microformats, but it certainly has the most influence on the search market. With <a href="https://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=101971">72% of the search market</a>, Google has the influence to make people pay attention to RDFa and Microformats.</p>

Dr. Rosling has a point. The media could be said to be disproportionately covering Swine Flu. However, how can the media not be expected to cover Swine Flu? It is new. It is spreading quickly. It is something that will potentially impact the daily lives of their readers (and themselves). Tuberculosis, while on the rise (see the chart to the right), is a known, is relatively contained and there is a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuberculosis#Vaccines">vaccine</a>.
</p><p>
Which should the media focus on? Which would you expect them to? While the media coverage maybe overblown (and I questioned putting this post up at all) I think it is understandable to want to track this potential new threat closely.

For "fun" I included H1N1 to see if the <a href="https://public-healthcare-issues.suite101.com/article.cfm/swine_flu_name_change">name change</a> was working. Based on search volume it does not seem to have been effective use of re-marketing dollars.

<p>
It's clear that the news is driving a lot of interest in Swine Flu and that there is very little residual interest in Tuberculosis. Whether this is the tail wagging the dog remains to be seen.

Last week Microsoft will started inviting users into <a href="https://www.vine.net/">Vine</a>, a public-service tool that will be especially useful during disasters. In case of an emergency or everyday life, Vine will be a multi-platform, ad-free method of staying in touch with networks. Once Vine is launched it has the potential to become a very powerful communication platform. Last week I had a phone call with Tammy Savage, the GM of Microsoft’s Public Safety Initiative.
</p><p>
Vine's primary goal is to connect you with a small group of people, reach them wherever they are, and allow you to determine what conditions are like where they are. Vine will do this by letting you connect to it as you desire. Initially that means <a href="https://Facebook.com">Facebook</a>, <a href="https://LinkedIn.com">LinkedIn</a>, email, SMS, and the Vine Windows client.
</p><p>
Vine has three main functions and many supporting features:
</p><p>
<strong>Send An Alert</strong> - You can send a message to a pre-constructed group via its own email address and SMS keyword. All replies go to the group and the messages can later be found on the group's report.
</p><p>
<strong>Post A Report - </strong>You can also post to the report. This is structured info that can be shared It's also a way to share information. You can "Check In Safe and Well", "Report Upcoming Plans", "Report a Situation", or share "General Information". Each option is associated with a timestamp, a location, and provides different data fields (for example "Check In Safe and Well" has a toggle for "Okay"/"Not Okay"; "Report Upcoming Plans" includes a date range). Tammy said that this isn't blogging , however it seems like it will be very similar.
</p><p>
<strong>Research News and Safety Info - </strong>On Vine you can search for news and alerts in a geographic area. You you will be able to include GeoRSS feeds from around the web. It provides situational awareness in cases of emergencies.
</p><p>
Vine will need to support many different platforms. In my discussion with Tammy she said that there will be web access, Twitter integration, and access for non-Windows users and mobile users. Tammy would not make a commitment to any platform however the most logical ones are Mac, Windows Mobile and the iPhone. An API is under consideration. Right now is a time of experimentation for the group. After they see their users' behavior the team will start making decisions about how to expand access.
</p><p>
Vine is a mashup made into a product. It uses a combination of eleven Microsoft services. The ones that I am aware of include: Live Search (for alerts), Messenger (for chat), Live ID (for identity), Hotmail/ Live Mail, VE Maps and SQL Server on the backend. In the future we can expect Tellme's voice recognition to be added. The Vine Windows Client will use the new Windows 7 Location and Sensing API in the future.
</p><p>
Vine will not have ads. The team is rightly concerned that ads could be distracting in a crisis. Instead they will add on premium services, but their will always be a free version. I would bet that premium services will be web services (not clients). Enterprises and governments will also be interested in hosting their own version.
</p><p>
Vine is going to start testing in the Seattle area. I asked Tammy if this meant that there would be staged emergencies (ala <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strong_Angel">Strong Angel</a>) to test; there won't be. Instead they want people to use it in their daily lives. Over that time they'll see how people integrate Vine into their lives.
</p><p>
In times of crisis people fall back on what they know. Twitter has quite famously been used during emergencies, but it does not have all of the functionality necessary to be the only method of communication used. Vine will use Twitter's powerful ability to to broadcast bits of information to many people from anywhere and supplement it with social networks, news reports, research ability and location-awareness. Tools like Twitter and Facebook need champions to make them suitable for disaster relief scenarios. Hopefully Vine (and <a href="https://instedd.org/geochat">InSTEDD's GeoChat</a>) can create a platform that can and will save lives.

I am never more painfully reminded of the limits of symmetric "friend" -based social networks than I am when I post a book review on Goodreads. I love books, and I love spreading the word about ones I enjoy (as well as ones I expected to enjoy, but didn't quite). Most of the time, my reviews go out quietly to a small group of friends, whose book recommendations I also follow. It's a lovely social network. But every once in a while, I post a link to one of my reviews on Twitter, and am immediately deluged with friend requests. Some of them are from people I know, but whose taste in books I may not share (or even care about), and many are from complete strangers. If I say "yes" to any of them, I have to see every book they review as well. As you can imagine, it doesn't scale.

If I say “yes” to any of them, I have to see every book they review as well. As you can imagine, it doesn’t scale.</p>
<p>I don’t mind if anyone in the world reads my reviews, and they are in fact all public on the site, but for someone to “follow” my reviews (get notified when I write them), they have to be accepted as my friend, in which case I see all their reviews as well. Asymmetric follow should at least be an option on any social network. It’s the way the world really works. We never find ourselves in clearly delineated friend-circles, where everyone has or wants complete visibility with everyone else, or none at all. </p>
<p>If you’re even a minor-league celebrity like me, there are way more people who are interested in what you are doing or thinking that you can possibly keep up with. I can’t even keep up regularly with the 500+ people I do follow on Twitter; keeping up with the 400,000 who follow me would be impossible. </p>
<p>Asymmetric follow is why I use Twitter regularly and Facebook much less often. With Twitter’s model, I can find people I’m interested in, whether or not they know me, and learn about them and their lives and thoughts. Others can include me in their lists. You become “friends” with complete strangers over time, by communicating with them (responding with @messages for example), perhaps by mutual following. In fact, Twitter’s wonderful system of @ messages means that anyone can address me - and so I find myself having conversations with complete strangers as well. I actually follow my @ messages more faithfully than I do my planned Follow list.</p>
<p>On Facebook, I’m expected to approve every request, and alas, I turn down far more than I accept. Amazingly, few people who I don’t know even bother to explain who they are and why they want to be my friend. I sometimes do accept strangers who make a good case for why I’d be interested in them, but I always ignore those I don’t know who don’t bother to even say hello. Ditto for LinkedIn and Plaxo and all the other greedy networks that are clamoring for my time and attention while requiring me to take explicit steps to approve or deny each request.</p>
<p>(Meanwhile Dopplr has seemingly implemented a form of reverse friending, in which I am forced to see the trips of anyone who has <em>requested</em> the ability to see mine, a kind of <a href=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bizarro>Bizarro</a>-world asymmetric follow that has rendered Dopplr completely useless to me.)</p>
<p>Asymmetric follow is also a good way to boost viral growth, as it encourages people to try the service without having to be an active user. We learned long ago from Usenet and mailing lists that there are always more lurkers than posters.</p>
<p>So, consider this a <a href=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LazyWeb>LazyWeb</a> request to all social networks out there: even if you have your own ideas about how to organize social networks, have an option for users to turn on “Twitter-mode.” I think you’d be surprised how well it works.</p>
