Piracy
In simplified terms, piracy is the illegal copying, dissemination and acquisition of copyright-protected material (music, movies, software, ebooks, etc). Peer-to-peer (P2P) services such as BitTorrent and Gnutella are often used to find and download pirated material.
The music and film industries have engaged in a variety of measures to curb piracy, but the long-term repercussions of these efforts are murky at best. Tim O'Reilly, Cory Doctorow and others with alternative viewpoints note that piracy is a more complicated issue than it first appears. For example, well-known artists may lose direct revenue from file sharing (although that point is open to debate), but the awareness born from piracy could be an effective form of marketing for obscure content creators.
