I hate to waste so much paper, but until the CD contains the updated editions I'll just keep filling up another book shelf.

Be aware - the CD contains old editions and out of date books.
These books were the best. - Nowadays buy the latest paper versions. Power Tools covers all general Unix needs.

For me, I would buy "The Unix CD Bookshelf" as soon as "Learning the Korn Shell" is replaced by "Using csh and tcsh". Also, Please let the update version of all the books inside the CD. Regards, Chilly Wang,

I wish to echo the exact message posted here by
Maqbool Hassan on March 5, 1999. I was also about
to buy the UNIX CD Bookshelf until I saw the old
editions. As Maqbool said the Korn shell book is
of little use and should be replaced by a csh/tcsh
book. If these changes were made I would buy this
CD.

I am a travelling consultant - taking a whole library of reference materials was not possible. I of course carried the hardcopy "Unix in a Nutshell". With the Unix CD Bookshelf, I have an execellent set of books at my fingertips without weighing down my suitcase.
The "Unix Power Tools", "sed & awk", and "Unix in a Nutshell" books are the ones I use most (every week), but the "Learning the vi Editor" and "Learning the Korn Shell" books are invaluable also. I'd like the capability to add additional titles to the set, but I think that this is a very good selection of books - (who uses the C shell, anyway?)
The search engine is excellent, very unintrusive. Now, I just need to find a way to justify expensing the "Networking CD Bookshelf"...

The bookshelf has an enorous potential to be improved and it is a question why better books were not packaged.
For example, Unix in a nutshell has a 2nd edition in the print and in cd is the old first.
Learning vi editor has 6th edition in print and in cd is the old one.
Learning Korn shell is no way of so use as of "Using csh and tcsh". Why Korn shell book in the bookshelf and why not cshell book?
As sed and awk is available on most system V, so it is ok, though it is now being replaced by perl.
Two books : Unix Power Tools, 2nd ed. and Learning the Unix Operating system, 4th edition are really good.
I was going to buy this bookshelf but if you are getting old editions in the cd, it is not worth spending.
I shall look forward to O'reilly to update the cd bookshelf for better value to its readers.
I shall buy it as soon as new editions are included and korn shell is replaced with csh book. Hope Oreilly would consider doing it.
Regards,
An Oreilly reader
