Company of Heroes
My latest gaming obsession is the new real-time strategy game, Company of Heroes. It's easily one of the best games of the year for the PC. And it's quite possibly one of the best real-time strategy games ever made. To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, the game currently has a 95% review average on GameRankings with 13 reviews, which puts it squarely on track to be one of the top 10 best reviewed PC games of all time.
It's so good, in fact, that I was compelled to complete every optional objective in the campaign missions.
The Company of Heroes demo is a whopping 1.8 gigabytes in size, but it offers a significant chunk of the game: unlimited, unlocked skirmish mode against the CPU and two single player maps.
Sure, the World War II genre has been done to death. But this is a real-time strategy game with incredible graphical detail, dynamic, destructible levels, and unparalleled unit intelligence and tactics. It elevates the entire real-time strategy genre to the next level.
Company of Heroes is the first new game I installed after installing Vista RC1. Coincidentally, it's also one of the first games with Microsoft's "Games for Windows" certification, which means (among other things) that it integrates automatically into Vista's Games menu.
Needless to say, highly recommended. If you've ever played and enjoyed an RTS game of any type, buy this game immediately. For everyone else, get the demo and try it yourself. I think you'll be impressed.
I find it interesting this is from developers Relic Entertainment, famous for the 3d RTS first, Homeworld. I don't enjoy RTS, but I do enjoy beautiful Space.
You may also want to download the demo via BitTorrent from https://reliccommunity.com/tracker/
if GameSpot (feat link), FilePlanet, or 3D Gamers don't do it fast enough for you.
Company of Heroes is indeed a great game. I highly recommend it also.
thomaspaine on September 24, 2006 09:49 AMYou may have covered this in a previous article, but could you list your hardware specs on the PC that runs Company of Heroes?
I'm in need of a new machine and thinking it will be a Xmas present to myself this year. But I need something that will run the games I want, like COH, AOE3, and other recent hits.
I don't need a full PC. I have the disc drives, hard drives, case. I've tried to read up on some video cards but there are so many and I've been out of the hardware loop for so long that I usually talk myself out of it. Video card is the biggest thing I suppose. I'm a fan of AMD processors...I need the board+chip+ram too.
COH looks awesome but as of yet my PC doesn't have the guns to even play the demo.
Happy gaming.
Brian on September 24, 2006 10:00 AMI just discovered COH yesterday and I wholeheartedly agree that its one of the best games to come to the PC in years. I'm still waiting on my DVD copy to come from gamestop next week. Once that happens I plan to play online (while the level competition is still lower).
Karthik on September 24, 2006 10:59 AMOn sale right now at GoGamer for $32.90
https://www.gogamer.com/Company-of-Heroes-DVD-Edition-Front-Page_stcVVproductId5640241VVcatId444710VVviewprod.htm
Well, let's see. Here are my current hardware recommendations for a new build. No case, no drives, just the core system.
optimal performance/price:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 - $320
nVidia 7950gt - $300
Asus P5B deluxe mobo - $195
2 GB DDR2 800 ram - $250
($1065)
optimal price/performance:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 - $180
nVidia 7600gt - $150
Asus P5B mobo - $140
2 GB DDR2 800 ram - $250
($720)
I can't recommend AMD CPUs at the moment because the price/perf of the Core 2 Duo CPUs is so outstanding. You'll save at best $75 and give up 15-25% performance.
Jeff Atwood on September 24, 2006 03:20 PMI built this machine which has almost exactly those specs, and I'm very happy with it.
Nvidia 7900gt 256ram
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Asus P5B deluxe mobo
2 GB DDR2 ram
Runs games, multiple instances of VS, rediculous numbers of browser windows without breaking a sweat.
Regarding the game, I personally think that playing /any/ game just because the graphics are good is stupid. Graphics get old really fast if the gameplay doesn't match.
I play 50% for the gameplay and 45% for the interaction of multiplayer games and 5% for the graphics.
Which is why my favorite online Action/FPS/RTS is an outdated, 10-year-old game called Wulfram 2. https://www.wulfram.com
I rarely play singleplayer games anymore because, well, there doesn't seem to be much point. So boring.
Company of Heroes is definitely one of the best PC games I've ever played. Quite possibly one of the best games in general.
It's a good take on RTS that isn't necessarily focused with tedious resource management (I guess in a way capturing resource points COULD be construed as this). But, essentially it's concerned with tactical combat management.
Great game!
Chris on September 24, 2006 05:58 PMThanks for the recommendation Jeff. I picked up a copy and am looking forward to trying it out. I'm a sucker for WW2 games though. I still love the Call of Duty games and am one of the few that liked Battlefield 1942.
Brian Swiger on September 24, 2006 07:20 PMis it a mmorpg ? Otherwise i won't bother...

Jeff Atwood on September 25, 2006 01:36 AMThanks Jeff.
I downloaded the demo. It took almost 12 hours using the torrent method. Getting it directly from the download sites wouldn't have been much better though. What happened to game companies getting the demo out there for everyone to easily try?
I've only completed 2 portions of the basic training and can already tell it's a sweet game.
I am/was a huge AOE and AOE II player (spent several hours on the weekends playing). The interface is similar, and I love the theme. While everyone is pointing out that "WWII games are done to death", not everyone has played them so another trip across that bridge isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Coleman on September 25, 2006 07:28 AMForget COH. Defcon's going to be my personal obsession come Friday.
Tyrannicus on September 25, 2006 11:40 AMI had a blast playing the COH demo all evening. This game is definately worth a purchase!
Alan Le on September 25, 2006 11:05 PMI have a soft spot for WWII games and SOH looks like a real time sinker.
I...must...resist!!!
Don Park on September 26, 2006 05:40 PMDamn, played this game last evening. I is really cool to use the cover en digg yourself in with al the different units. This game absolute rocks!!!
Chris on September 27, 2006 02:45 AMThis is an excellent game! Probably the best RTS I have ever played.
I have been playing the demo for over a week. I still have not figured out how to beat the computer (set to normal) in skirmish mode.
My only complaint is the amount of cursing in the game. They really went overboard, in my opinion. If I can't turn it off the cursing in the full game without turning off all chatter, I will probably not purchase the game.
Tod Birdsall on September 28, 2006 06:13 AMKal_Torak...LOL...And I am Belgarath.
Rob on October 4, 2006 07:54 PMI've been playing this game and am mighty impressed. I'm going to have to upgrade my system as a result but it's games like these that make it worthwhile.
Jeff Bailey on October 9, 2006 12:47 AMDid you have any problems with flicker, or missing directx files on Vista? I just installed Vista RC2 and then the COH demo, and I had to install directx as well, seperately, to get the game to run. And now, while it runs, there is horrible flicker, especially in the menus. I'm on a Geforce 7800GT... Any ideas?
Chris Hynes on October 11, 2006 11:23 AMChris, I heard there were issues with the latest nVidia beta Vista drivers. Have you tried the "built-in" nVidia drivers included in Vista RC1?
Jeff Atwood on October 11, 2006 12:18 PMI've tried it both ways. I installed the beta drivers, then rolled back, then installed again... no dice. I'm hoping nVidia releases updated drivers soon, or at least to coincide with the Vista RTM in November...
Chris Hynes on October 11, 2006 12:30 PMGreat game
dink von hole on October 12, 2006 05:43 AMI received my DVD retail full version 3 days ago and haven't been sleeping much this week since I'm up late working the single player campaign. This game simply is the best around, being like the best of Dawn of War, SOLDIER!, Sudden Strike and Battlfield 1942 all rolled into one. The troops chatter including all the foul obscenities you'd expect in war is priceless.
I'm running it flawlessly with default settings on:
Athlon 64x2 4000+
GeForce 6800GT 256mb DDR3
2 Gigs DDR2 400 RAM
Soundblaster Audigy 2Z
WinXP Pro
I have horrible flickering in Vista RC2 as well. Nvidia needs to release an update, Vista is so much nicer than XP that I just can't go back. Nvidia is holding me back!
Trix on October 15, 2006 08:39 AMJust installed the nVidia RC2 drivers. It still has bad flickering in the menus, but in game is fairly playable. Some flickering, but not too bad.
Chris Hynes on October 18, 2006 07:33 AMI had the flickering problem on my NVida 7900GTO, Vista RC2. I just turn the antialiasing ON and the flickering is gone. It is running really smooth right now, I suggest you guys try that option, the beta drivers are fine.
Vallkhan on October 20, 2006 06:54 PMThe Best i say "BEST" game i have ever played ....just finished only quibble i wish it had another 100 missions lol
azz on December 4, 2006 04:52 AMi dont get it,,no control of soldiers,,enemy appears from no where, slow moving, obvious routs have to b taken!!!! crap.. i wasplayin command and conquer 10 years ago an that was better
rich on December 18, 2006 12:30 PMI now completed company of heroes in all ways to complete it in any difficulty. and i must say, nothing beats this magnificent game. having completed multiple real-time strategy games in my life. This is the best i've tried so far! can't put words on how much u can destroy and do in this game. its simply unbelieveble. GREAT GAME.
eric0 on February 12, 2007 02:21 AMcant wait to get this game but, i have an old system.

AMD 2600+
1024mb DDR ram
A7600 GS
I am planning to buy this game.
Will i get a decent performance on my riG?
P4 3.0GHz
1GB DDR RAM
XFX 7300GT
Or shud i wait for my BIG 7900GS 512 MB to arrive?
amogh on March 17, 2007 06:28 AMthis game is awesome ive finished the game and got all the medals but one the one were u have 2 destroy the enemy base while defending a town. does any thing happen wen u get all medals?
this is the best rts i've ever played!
Has any on tried holding carentan the leval with bridges with only the men left from previous level which means no training no reinforcing i have it's not easy?
7th airborne on May 2, 2007 08:19 PMdoes any one know the best patch to have?
7th airborne on May 2, 2007 08:23 PMhas any one heard of ecoh? the creators make new campaigns, maps, units change the levels of units like attack, accuracy much more and they make lots of camo 4 units and put in more vehichles and a lot more.
7th airborne on May 23, 2007 02:26 AMeh... too much money.lol im only 12 though
blahboy on June 23, 2007 10:05 AMCompany of Heroes has to be one of the best games I've ever played. It makes all the other WW2 games look like friggin Spyro. The only other game that come anywhere near it, in my opinion, is Brothers in Arms. The first time I heard an arty strike, scared the living hell out of me. I give it 11 out of 10, it's that awesome
PIEMAN on August 15, 2007 05:34 PMIf you want to make sure your setup (ie, cpu, memory, and gfx card) is all up to the min requirements or if you surpass the recommended requirements goto systemrequirementslab.com
There you can ck your cpu against Company of Heroes and many other games. The test takes anywhere from 2-3 minutes to pop up the results.
I just got this game for $29.99 what a bargain. I'm running:
Dual Athlon 64 2.2ghz
2 gigs of mem
nVida GeForce 7900 gs oc
I have just about all the setting on high and a resolution of 1024x768 i think, and get 75 frames per second (which is nice and smooth).
Just got C of H on September 11, 2007 07:27 AMThe sequel is out and Opposing Fronts is only $36.95 at gamegiants.net
David Mason on September 26, 2007 11:40 PMyes, this game is very unique as far as gameplay and graphics.
Another game to try is warcraft 1,2,3, WOW! they dont have as good graphics but they still OWN!
WARCRAFTER on October 2, 2007 02:04 PMthanks for mentioning this game a year ago. I know I'd've read about it elsewhere as time went by, but i knew about the game here first.
I started playing somewhere a year after its release, and this is probably the best RTS i have ever experienced so far.
