O'Reilly Media - Spreading the knowledge of technology innovators
MySQL Conference & Expo is now underway in Santa Clara, CA. Follow the conference on twitter, and check the conference site for latest news, coverage, videos, presentation files, and photos.
Today was huge in the Twitterverse. Ashton Kutcher beat CNN to the finish line of over a million Twitter followers. Oprah twittered for the first time. Evan Williams, Twitter's CEO, appeared on the Oprah show. And it was also a big day for us, because Ev left her a copy of The Twitter Book, written by Tim O'Reilly, the founder and CEO of O'Reilly Media, and Sarah Milstein, Web 2.0 consultant. The new definitive guide aims to demystify Twitter and hits bookstores next month. And for those who can't wait for the print version, the ebook version of The Twitter Book will be available late next week from oreilly.com.

Applying the Lessons of the Web to Our Energy Networks
Soldiers on the ground need to know the territory they patrol like the back of their hand. Knowing where insurgents like to plant IEDs or that an important political leader lives in a certain house can prove the difference between success and failure. But what happens when a platoon transfers out of Baghdad and a brand new one moves in? All that experience used to go out the window. But thanks to TIGR, a map-based knowledge-base developed by DARPA, platoons can now document information they learn on patrol, as well as accessing the latest intelligence. In this interview, hear how TIGR was developed, how it is helping troops stay alive and perform their missions better, and what the realities of deploying a brand new technology into a war zone are. One of our most popular talks at the Web 2.0 Expo SF was Eric Ries' The Lean Startup: a Disciplined Approach to Imagining, Designing, and Building New Products. I've embedded an audio version of his slides. Eric recommends the talk for people who want to work leaner and faster, staying grounded in facts. Read more.
The news has now been leaked that President Obama intends to nominate Aneesh Chopra as the nation's first Chief Technology Officer. Chopra may not be a Valley guy, but Silicon Valley is going to like him a lot. He's energetic, insightful and can speak the language (again, watch the video). He's no bureaucrat. Aneesh Chopra is a rock star. He's a brilliant, thoughtful change-maker. He knows technology, he knows government, and he knows how to put the two together to solve real problems. Read more.
If your cloud provider refuses to answer any specific question about their security architecture related to your security requirements, run--don't walk--away from that vendor. Security is one of the first things businesses mention when discussing fears about cloud computing. Cloud computing represents a loss of control for customers and these fears are therefore very valid. Read more.
Since I last posted numbers on Facebook's user base six week ago, the company has added close to 20 million active users. I've had a few requests for detailed numbers by country so I quickly assembled an update. Among countries with at least a million users, the fastest-growing are Indonesia and the Philippines. As the "death of the newspaper" gets continuing coverage (mostly on television), new apps bring the New York Times, USA Today, and now The Wall Street Journal, to your iPhone. I have to ask: why do these apps look so much alike? is there a hidden danger that they might be confused with each other? Looking for an alternative to apps provided by these long-lived journalistic institutions, I decided to download the USA Today iPhone app to see if they did things any differently. While I wouldn't want to see the Times or the Journal mimicking USA Today's look-and-feel, they could learn a thing or two from some of the advanced techniques that USA Today employed. Read more.
A look at multiprocessing basics. The multiprocessing module includes a relatively simple API for dividing work up between multiple processes based on the API for the threading module. Read more.
In the fall of 2005, the Authors Guild, which then had about 8000 members, and five publishers sued Google for copyright infringement. Many copyright professionals expected the Authors Guild v. Google case to be the most important fair use case of the 21st century. This column argues that the proposed settlement of this lawsuit is a privately negotiated compulsory license primarily designed to monetize millions of orphan works. It will benefit Google and certain authors and publishers, but it is questionable whether the authors of most books in the corpus (the “dead souls” to which the title refers) would agree that the settling authors and publishers will truly represent their interests when setting terms for access to the Book Search corpus. The Twitter Book--Coming Soon
Twitter CEO Evan Williams Left a Copy with Oprah
Today was huge in the Twitterverse. Ashton Kutcher beat CNN to the finish line of over a million Twitter followers. Oprah twittered for the first time. I'm happy to announce that more than 160 O'Reilly books are now available on Kindle, and are being sold without any DRM (Digital Rights Management). Though we do offer more than 400 ebooks direct from our website, the number for sale on Kindle will be limited until Amazon updates Kindle 1 to support table rendering ("maybe this summer" is the most specific they would get). We expect to add another 100 or so titles in the coming weeks; those have needed a more detailed analysis of the table content to identify good candidates. There were two main reasons we held our books back from sale on Kindle: poor rendering of complex content and compulsory DRM. Read more.
I've been working a lot lately to imagine what Government 2.0 might look like. One of the most inspiring and thought-provoking stories I've read recently might not look like a Gov 2.0 story, but it is: Island DIY: Kauai residents don't wait for state to repair road. We've gotten used to what Frank DiGiammarino of the National Academy of Public Administration recently called "vending machine government" - the idea that we put in our taxes and fees, and get out services: $28 for a driver's license, $1 million for a mile of interstate highway, $1 Trillion for a war or a financial rescue. Slate's Moneybox has an interactive map that shows job creation and loss throughout the US for the past two years. Watching it flow through each month's up and down definitely made the employment situation in the country clearer to me. Like any great visualization image and the legend make it very clear what's happening. Slate's piece includes an explanation of how they created the map using the Labor Department's local area unemployment statistics. Read more.
