Google Earth 5 hit the Internet earlier this week (visions of some cataclysmic asteroid impact come to mind with that statement), debuting everything from a historical mode that lets you see the evolution of terrain over time to a dramatically expanded oceanographic mode that lets you see a whole new world 'under da sea' to the rather stunning release of Google Mars, in which the orbiter maps from the exploratory missions of the last decade are now laid out in stunning detail (and hopelly waking up a whole new level of appreciation for the Red Planet).

The concept Geo-tagging data is not new. With GPS and cellular-network based geolocation available nearly everywhere, geographic information is showing up everywhere that it is applicable; cell phones, web sites, rss feeds, etc... It is the backbone of the "geoweb". There are numerous programs for geo-tagging your data, and you can even geotag your pictures from your iPhone, if you so choose. With the Google Earth API, you can take this information and publish it on an interactive globe for the entire web to see.

Frank Taylor is the publisher of Google Earth Blog (link: https://gearthblog.com) which for 2.5 years has been providing news, tips, and links to content and features of Google Earth. He worked for fifteen years in the fields of 3D graphics and space simulation mostly while at NASA Johnson Space Center. In recent years he has started several Internet companies the most recent being the blog. Because of his research of Google Earth developments his interest in geospatial applications and the developing Geoweb has intensified. Taylor is a hiker, pilot and a blue water sailor when he isn't in front of a computer - although he sometimes combines the activities.

Rebecca Moore is a computer scientist and longtime software professional. At Google, she conceived and now manages the Google Earth Outreach program, which supports nonprofits, communities and indigenous peoples around the world in applying Google's mapping tools to the world's pressing problems in areas such as environmental conservation, human rights, cultural preservation and creating a sustainable society. Her personal work using Google Earth was recently instrumental in stopping a plan to log more than a thousand acres of redwoods in her Santa Cruz Mountain community. Rebecca earned her undergraduate degree from Brown University in Artificial Intelligence, Masters from Stanford in Cognitive Psychology and spent several years in the Stanford PhD program in Computer Science before taking leave to join a Silicon Valley startup.

His performance work for the web started in 1995 when he was a lead engineer on the Netscape Enterprise Server 2.0 team. Ironically, he never thought he'd ever be working on browsers back then.
