Safari Books Online FAQs
-
How does my Safari access work?
As an ActivePerl Pro Studio or ActiveTcl Pro Studio member, you have the ability to search across the entire Safari library at all times. However, search results are rendered in two different ways depending upon whether a book resides on your personal Bookshelf or not. For every book that resides on your Bookshelf you can see every word of that book from cover to cover. For all other books, you can browse or search in preview mode. Previews consist of the first few paragraphs of text. Preview as many sections as you like, as often as you like before you decide whether to add it to your bookshelf.
Safari Books Online is automatically included with all new ActivePerl Pro Studio and ActiveTcl Pro Studio memberships and renewals.

How do I add books to my Bookshelf?
When you find a search result in a book you like, simply add the corresponding book to your Bookshelf with one click. Over time, you can modify your Bookshelf through swapping. So, if you've outgrown an introductory book, it can be traded for an advanced one. The only rule is that any given book needs to stay on your Bookshelf for 30 days before you are allowed to swap.
-
What is the Safari slots system?
ActivePerl Pro Studio accounts include 5 "slots" on your Bookshelf. Most Safari books fill up 1 slot on your Bookshelf; some fill ½-slot, 2-slots or 3-slots. If you choose only 1-slot books, and swap aggressively, you can use 60 1-slot books during the course of the year. If your mix favors 1/2-slot books, you'll have access to more than 60 books during the year. Likewise, if your mix tends toward 2-slot or 3-slot books, you will have access to slightly fewer books.
