Why Kindle Should Be An Open Book — In O'Reilly Insights on Forbes.com, Tim O'Reilly boldly predicts that "unless Amazon embraces open ebook standards like epub, which allow readers to read books on a variety of devices, the Kindle will be gone within two or three years." In the new column, O'Reilly explains why he's thrown his support behind "epub and other open ebook standards, providing our books as "ebook bundles" that give the reader the choice of pdf (still the only viable choice for many highly formatted books like our Head First series of "brain friendly" tutorials that even HTML can't handle), epub, and mobi, an HTML-based predecessor to the Kindle format that lacks digital rights management but that can be imported into the Kindle." John Wilbanks has a passion for lowering the barrier between scientists who want to share information. A graduate of Tulane University, Mr. Wilbanks started his career working as a legislative aide, before moving on to pursue work in bioinformatics, which included the founding of Incellico, a company which built semantic graph networks for use in pharmaceutical research and development. Mr. Wilbanks now serves as the Vice President of Science at Creative Commons, and runs the Science Commons project. He will be speaking at The O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in March, on the challenges and accomplishments of Science Commons, and he's joining us today to talk a bit about it. Read more.

A friend of mine, NASA systems analyst Joshua McKenty, dropped a note recently in my twitter feed about WebHooks, and why they're superior to syndication as a mechanism for building cross-server applications. While I have run into webhooks periodically in the last couple of years and been intrigued by them, Josh's comments made me go back and really think about them again. While I think that there are still a number of issues to be resolved, overall, I'm beginning to think that he may be right. Read more.
In this second installment (the first post is found here), we look at computer book sales in specific technology categories. Remember that we've organized the data into six "Category Families" -- Systems and Programming, Web Design and Development, Business Applications, Digital Media Applications, Consumer Operating Systems and Devices, and Other. Within each Family are category group, super-category, category, and atomic category, in a five-level hierarchy. For example, Systems and Programming includes programming languages, databases, software engineering, general programming, security, and so on.
