Maker Faire: Freaks, geeks and entrepreneurs...
Maker Faire: Freaks, geeks and entrepreneurs Fortune Small Business article by Jessica Bruder...
They came by the thousands: rocket builders and knitting enthusiasts, weavers and welders, blacksmiths and bicyclemakers. They brought flamethrowers, catapults and a two-story robot that spat Ping-Pong balls. They taught visitors how to make ice cream with liquid nitrogen and how to turn old socks into plush monsters.Maker Faire Bay Area, May 30 & 31 - 2009! Get tickets now!
Welcome to the weird world of Maker Faire, a giant melting pot of science geeks, do-it-yourselfers and entrepreneurs. Since the event launched in San Mateo, Calif. in 2006, it has attracted a growing number of innovators seeking to catalyze their startup businesses... "They see small ways to change the world or change their lives," says Dale Dougherty, publisher of Make magazine, which hosts the Faire. "They might make a million dollars, but that's not their life's goal."

Where the real innovation happens
Nice article on Forbes with Tim (MAKE granddaddy) and Maker Faire mention...Where the real innovation happens via .
So where's the alpha-geek innovation happening today?Makers, where do you see innovation bubbling up? Is it in the lab or in the garage, or both?
I see it bubbling up in areas like manufacturing, open-source hardware, sensor networks and robotics.
Yes, there are start-ups in these areas, but, more important, there's an enthusiast boom. The Maker Faire, an event O'Reilly Media launched in 2006 to celebrate the people playing at the interface of digital technology and the physical world, last year drew 65,000 attendees, including many families, to view the work of the 500 exhibiting "makers."
Or consider synthetic biology, where high school students are exploring the frontiers through events like the International Genetically Engineered Machines competition. When high-schoolers are doing genetic engineering, you know the future holds some big surprises!
We see innovators working from the outside to put flesh on the vision of government transparency articulated by the Obama administration. Software "hacks," like chicagocrime.org, one of the first Google Maps mash-ups, are becoming a prototype for how government data can be turned into new consumer services by start-ups like everyblock.com.

Advanced Maker Faire tickets now on sale!

Many of you may still be huddled around the cast iron stove down at the local feed store, spinning snowed-in tall tales with the other old codgers, but it's getting to that time of the season where thoughts drift ahead to springtime and the glorious sights, sounds, and smells of the spring fair.
Okay, so it may be more likely that you're huddled around a space heater, twittering on your tricked-out G1 whines about how freakin' cold it is and how you have a flu you can't shake, but you're probably starting to dream about springtime too, and *your* favorite fair: Maker Faire!
To help sustain you for a few more weeks of harsh winter, get you thinking about the Faire, and maybe some cool projects you'd like to demo there (oh, and to save you a few bucks), we've put advanced, discounted tickets on sale. Order your tickets before May 20th and get 20-50% off the regular ticket price (see link below for details). Also, we have an offer to get a free Adult Day Pass (a $25 value) to the Faire for each subscription to MAKE and CRAFT you purchase.
Find out more about Maker Faire.

"Oh My God, It's Harrod Blank!"

David Silberberg's documentary, Oh My God, It's Harrod Blank!, about art car artist Harrod Blank (whose amazing work we've shown at Maker Faire) is premiering at the Slamdance Film Festival on January 16th.
Sayeth the press copy:
An obsessively made documentary filmed over 16 years, exploring the creative life and adventures of director Silberberg's friend, the eccentric art car artist, film-maker, and entrepreneur Harrod Blank. Blank is captured from his youth growing up in the woods with chickens and working as a camera assistant for his father - the venerable film-maker Les Blank - to the creation of his first attention-getting art car, to his current multi-faceted career as creator and head of a nationwide art car movement.Rarely does a film about an artist leave us with such a good feeling about life. This film goes far beyond a portrait of an artist, it covers home remedies for balding, attraction to black women, independent filmmaking, art cars, and most importantly it reminds us of the journey to discovering oneself that we all must take.
[Thanks, Sherry!]

Maker Faire Newcastle 2009
Here's some info about our upcoming Maker Faire Newcastle 2009-
The first UK Maker Faire will take place in Newcastle 14-15 March 2009 as part of Newcastle ScienceFest - a 10 day festival celebrating creativity and innovation.
In the last decade Newcastle has joined forces with neighbouring Gateshead and has transformed itself into one of Europe's most exciting places. Architectural icons such as the gigantic Angel of the North (whose 54m wingspan is longer than a jumbo jet!) best symbolises the region's unquenchable thirst for creativity and sense of fun.
Innovation has always been at the heart of the city. Newcastle's Mosley Street was the first in the world to be lit by electricity and famous inventors such as Charles Parsons, William Armstrong, George Stephenson and Joseph Swan have all lived or worked in the city. Today, Newcastle continues to inspire inventors, artists and scientists alike. Johnathon Ive, designer of the iPod studied at one of the city's universities and scientists at the Centre of Life were the first in the world to successfully clone a human embryo!
The city is proud to host the UK's first Maker Faire and looks forward to welcoming UK and international makers in March!

Oakland's NIMBY Space Needs Help
NIMBY, a DIY space for artists and makers in West Oakland is re-locating and needs help to defray moving expenses and the cost of a security deposit. They are trying to raise $17,000 by December 15. Spaces like NIMBY are so important to creating the distinctive local culture in the Bay Area and other cities. They also establish a collaborative environment for all kinds of creative people to make things and share them with others. These spaces always struggle to make ends meet but they almost always survive, just barely. I've made a contribution on behalf of Make and Maker Faire, and I hope you'll join me in supporting NIMBY.For the past five years NIMBY has been a space where artists, craftsmen and tinkerers can create the new, the impossible, and the never seen before. Many of the pieces at Burning Man, Coachella, the Maker Faire and The Crucible's Fire Arts Festival are created and stored at NIMBY. NIMBY not only offers space to create, but supports its artists with resources, assistance in sourcing re-purposed material, as well as logistical and technical guidance. Snook, the founder of NIMBY, is known in the community as the one to call when technical or logistical issues seem insurmountable. This supportive culture shared by all members of the NIMBY community is at the root of the amazing art that emerges from its doors. NIMBY has been the birthplace of Dance Dance Immolation, the Steam Punk Tree House, Colossus, The Kinetic SteamWorks Steam Ship, Norville Parchment's Angel Series, and so much more. Fire Artists such as Therm, Interpretive Arson, Department of Spontaneous Combustion, Exotherm, Ryon Gesink, and Orion Fredericks have all created their pieces at NIMBY. At the new NIMBY we are working to create a 30,000 square foot event/ gallery space with permanent installations of works such as Michael Christian's IT, The Steam Punk Tree House, Colossus and the Big Rig Jig.The City of Oakland has been very supportive of our transition and is working with us closely. Trucking, architectural drawings, contractors, and materials are all lined-up to move in and build-out the new space. We also have 5 years of heart, gumption and making it work behind us - but we need your support of a financial contribution so that NIMBY can continue to serve the local arts community.

Best of Maker Faire: fundraising for worthwhile causes
I understand Maker Faire Austin is done and gone, but I'm still thinking about how much fun it was. Over the next week or 2, I'll continue to share some highlights from the most make-tastic event Austin's ever seen.

Sparkfun Electronics raised a pretty penny for some Austin nonprofits:
The soldering workshop was a huge hit! We accepted donations for the soldering kits we gave away to students of the workshop. We were able to raise $884 for Austin non-profits Angelheart Children's Shelter and The Robot Group! Thanks goes to everyone who came and checked out our booth and our soldering workshops.
Factor in things Faire-goers purchased from the many independent artisans / Makers at the Faire, and Maker Faire Austin seems to have had a nicely positive impact. Add on the encouragement current and future Makers received, and that's an even better story:)

Best of Maker Farie: Recycling Extravaganza
I understand Maker Faire Austin is done and gone, but I'm still thinking about how much fun it was. Over the next week or 2, I'll continue to share some highlights from the most make-tastic event Austin's ever seen.

In addition to many Makers reusing salvaged materials in their projects, Maker Faire Austin also managed to recycle over a ton of materials. Literally:
1360 lbs corrugated cardboard
700 lbs # 1 pete plastic (soda and water bottles)32 lbs mixed plastic
570 lbs brown glass
530 lbs mixed paper
62 lbs aluminum cans
That's 3222 lbs or a bit over a ton and a half.
