Flex Quick Tip: Detecting Local vs. Remote Instance

February 11, 2009
Have you ever had the need to manage multiple data sources in your application? Perhaps in development you want pull from one data source, and when you are running on a hosted server, pull from another data source. Well, here is an extremely basic, yet useful tip for doing exactly that.
CIA World Factbook in ILOG Elixir, version 2.0

February 4, 2009
Just under a year ago the ILOG elixir team released a demo of their Flex charting components using data from the CIA world factbook. A new version of the demo was posted last Friday and looks really good. The new version expands upon the original by using PureMVC for the code, a better theme (by Juan Sanchez), and an updated UI. It also implements a few new views and adds drill down to the tree-map. It's a great example of what Flex was made for: powerful data visualizations that would be immensely difficult in traditional web languages.

February 3, 2009
If you have used Google Analytics to monitor and analyze traffic on a website, you were most likely impressed with the ability it gave you to understand the nature of visits to and exits from the site, learn how visitors found it, discover how much time people spent there, et cetera. Recently, the Google Analytics team announced the availability of an open source, native AS3 API that enables you to utilize Google Analytics (GA) tracking from within your RIA.

Flex XML Quick Tip

January 28, 2009
Here's a quick tip when working with XML in Flex. E4X is great in most scenarios, it allows you to easily traverse and filter XML-based data structures, and in most cases it is your friend. However, one area where E4X struggles is if you have an XML structure where a node name contains a dash "-" character. Here's how you can get around that issue.
