Building Internet Firewalls, 2nd Edition Review, February 29 2004
Very usefull book for admins! While I learned quite a bit of good information, the second section (Building Firewalls) is where I personally learned the most. The chapters in this section discuss topics like packet filtering, firewall architectures and design, proxy systems and bastion hosts.
An informative, well-put together book that can be used as a reference and >in some sections, a tutorial as well.
The book also talks about reasons for having (or not having) a firewall, security issues and near the end of the book, what to do if the site you're protecting with a firewall does get broken into.

Building Internet Firewalls, 2nd Edition Review, March 16 2002
This book was excellent. Coming from a programmer's perspective (and having a fairly limited experience with bare-bones networking topology), I was thoroughly impressed with the brilliant way this information was presented. I read this entire book in 4 days, and was hooked on the way in which its technical precision was presented in such an understandable manner.
I havent taken this much raw, fresh, and applicable knowledge from a book in quite some time, and for every situation where I found myself wondering about another item: its explanation wasn't far behind. Very excellent presentation, and advanced readers will find it easy to circumvent unneeded chapters without sacrificing continuity. I would most certainly recommend this book to anyone needing to work with and/or implement a firewall, and especially for anyone interested in network security as a whole. Extremely heads up, and a must for System Administrators!!
Building Internet Firewalls, 2nd Edition Review, August 16 2001
I found this book both informative and extremely accessible - a rare combination in technical writing. Not only were all the issues I was interested in covered, they were treated both concisely and with an approachable and even occasionally humorous tone which is quite refreshing.
Where the book did not go into extensive detail it gave a very comprehensive introduction to the topic and certainly made researching the required level of detail independently much easier.

Building Internet Firewalls, 2nd Edition Review, September 07 2000
It was from a long time that reading a book about solutions was not a product manual; this is definitively a plain explanation about haow technologies are working and how to manage them if you want to build a firewall understanding what it is and what is needed to build it on a service prospective. Thanks a lot to the authors
Building Internet Firewalls, 2nd Edition Review, August 28 2000
Good reference on firewalls
This second edition explains in great detail about firewalls, both in building them (and the software and hardware you can use) and maintaining them. It also discusses the different types of firewalls available, which services you want to protect (World Wide Web, electronic mail and netnews,
FTP, telnet, teleconferencing, for example).
The book is timely enough to discuss the 'break-ins' of several well-known web sites earlier this year, thus pointing out one need for the use of firewalls. While I learned quite a bit of good information, the second section (Building Firewalls) is where I personally learned the most. The chapters in this section discuss topics like packet filtering, firewall >architectures and design, proxy systems and bastion hosts.
The book also talks about reasons for having (or not having) a firewall, security issues and near the end of the book, what to do if the site you're
protecting with a firewall does get broken into.
An informative, well-put together book that can be used as a reference and >in some sections, a tutorial as well.
Building Internet Firewalls, 2nd Edition Review, July 27 2000
I have read just about every book out there about firewalls, and have to say that this book is: concise, to the point and EXTREAMLY informative. A must have for anyone that wants to learn about security, and more specifically firewall procedures, policies and configurations.
Media reviews "There isn't much to say about the style and detail of the book really, it's an O'Reilly book, it's clear, well laid out and fairly concise. It's very well sectioned in a typical O'Reilly style with a good usage of tables, clear and understandable diagrams where needed and tips/pointers...The book was published in 2002 but it hasn't really dated at all, there are a few new protocols now and technologies but as the book is platform/vendor independent it has weathered the year past just fine...I would recommend it to anyone involved in administering a network with public nodes, people who want to know more about protecting their home network and firewalls in general and any security or network pro involved in implementing firewalls of any scale. A great reference, well deserved SFDC 8/10."

"An excellent, informative read."--Rob Fenwick, PC Plus, January 2003
"To be honest, I didn't really feel this book would offer me much after all, I am comfortable writing ipfilter rules and since I use OpenBSD for everything, I don't have to do much in the way of OS hardening. I was wrong, 'Building Internet Firewalls' is about much more than just firewalls...'Building Internet Firewalls' is an excellent resource. It provides a comprehensive overview of the security process. The detailed descriptions, and summary of recommendations of application protocols alone make it outstanding for firewall administrators. This is a book that is useful on many levels, and by many people within an organization."

Completely revised and much expanded, the new edition of the highly respected and bestselling Building Internet Firewalls now covers Unix, Linux, and Windows NT. This practical and detailed guide explains in step-by-step fashion how to design and install firewalls and configure Internet services to work with a firewall. It covers a wide range of services and protocols and offers a complete list of resources, including the location of many publicly available firewalls construction tools.
Full Description
In the five years since the first edition of this classic book was published, Internet use has exploded. The commercial world has rushed headlong into doing business on the Web, often without integrating sound security technologies and policies into their products and methods. The security risks--and the need to protect both business and personal data--have never been greater. We've updated Building Internet Firewalls to address these newer risks.
What kinds of security threats does the Internet pose? Some, like password attacks and the exploiting of known security holes, have been around since the early days of networking. And others, like the distributed denial of service attacks that crippled Yahoo, E-Bay, and other major e-commerce sites in early 2000, are in current headlines.
Firewalls, critical components of today's computer networks, effectively protect a system from most Internet security threats. They keep damage on one part of the network--such as eavesdropping, a worm program, or file damage--from spreading to the rest of the network. Without firewalls, network security problems can rage out of control, dragging more and more systems down.
Like the bestselling and highly respected first edition, Building Internet Firewalls, 2nd Edition, is a practical and detailed step-by-step guide to designing and installing firewalls and configuring Internet services to work with a firewall. Much expanded to include Linux and Windows coverage, the second edition describes:
- Firewall technologies: packet filtering, proxying, network address translation, virtual private networks
- Architectures such as screening routers, dual-homed hosts, screened hosts, screened subnets, perimeter networks, internal firewalls
- Issues involved in a variety of new Internet services and protocols through a firewall
- Email and News
- Web services and scripting languages (e.g., HTTP, Java, JavaScript, ActiveX, RealAudio, RealVideo)
- File transfer and sharing services such as NFS, Samba
- Remote access services such as Telnet, the BSD "r" commands, SSH, BackOrifice 2000
- Real-time conferencing services such as ICQ and talk
- Naming and directory services (e.g., DNS, NetBT, the Windows Browser)
- Authentication and auditing services (e.g., PAM, Kerberos, RADIUS);
- Administrative services (e.g., syslog, SNMP, SMS, RIP and other routing protocols, and ping and other network diagnostics)
- Intermediary protocols (e.g., RPC, SMB, CORBA, IIOP)
- Database protocols (e.g., ODBC, JDBC, and protocols for Oracle, Sybase, and Microsoft SQL Server)
