Webmaster in a Nutshell, 2nd Edition Review, October 12 2000
Very nice & concise book: definitely the best place to start
picking up the newer technology. Putting the examples online
would add usefulness to this fine text.
Webmaster in a Nutshell, 2nd Edition Review, September 09 2000
Great book! I bought it when I was doing PHP on Unix development for a quick Javascript/CSS reference and have found it incredibly useful since. I'm currently developing on Linux and NT it is indispenable no matter where you take it.
Webmaster in a Nutshell, 2nd Edition Review, May 26 2000
I recently bought the Deluxe Edition at a Barnes & Noble store (Bargin Shelves in the front). They had it at $14.99 (from $69.99). Let me say I love it.
This basic version of the book would have been a five though if i didn't have the deluxe version. The reason it isn't that I was spoiled by the Deluxe Edition of Webmaster in a Nutshell.
This basic version is a great reference tool for all your web needs. The deluxe version was a god send though, as it had five very good books on cd, and gave you a free years subscription to O'Reilly's Web Developer's Libary on the web, which by the way has the latest version's of all the books.

An incredible book! Definitely the most used ORA book I currently own. I used it for months as a web designer before even GETTING to the parts dealing with server config. Absolutely indispensable. I have never seen its equal.

ahhh! a second edition of my 'bible'. this truly is a book you keep by your keyboard - *not* on the bookshelf. written in a excellently concise and accurate manner its small footprint belies the wealth of information at your fingertips. of no use for people learning web/html/cgi/javascript/server admin once you know what you're doing you'll use this book all the time. i just love this book - can you tell? ;-)

This is an excellent book which is a complete and comprehensive guide to all elements of Webmastering. No Webmaster is complete without!!!!!
Media reviews "As the Internet moves forward, you, as a webmaster, have to become increasingly knowledgeable and adept in a greater number of programming languages and technologies. First, there was HTML, then along came JavaScript. CSS was the next hot thing. Each time you've had to hit the books to upgrade your skills. By now most of us have a large collection of books about HTML, JavaScript, HTML 4, XML, etc. sitting by our computers for reference. What if you could squish that stack of books into one? Impossible you say. Well, not anymore. O'Reilly just released Webmaster in a Nutshell 2nd edition. The book manages to crunch several languages and technologies into one, compact, reference book. At $24.95, this is one book that will pay for itself a thousand times over in time saved and increased productivity. Rating: 5/5." --Matt Mickiewicz, Webmasterbase.com
"This is one of a small set of books which I use all the time. It doesn't cover Java as such, but is a mine of useful and accessible information on HTTP, HTML, JavaScript, XML, CSS, CGI, Perl, PHP and Apache configuration. Although I have many other books which cover these areas, usually in much more detail, this book is often all I need to answer a particular question. To me, this book, along with Unix in a Nutshell, show how good a "Nutshell" book can be. Small enough to carry about, and packed full of genuinely useful information." --Frank Carver, javaranch.com, Dec 2000
"Webmaster in a NutShell by Stephan Spainhour & Robert Eckstein answers all those geeky questions like server configuration settings, all the valid attributes of an HTML tag, configuring Apache for server side includes and so on. Even if you aren't planning to actually deal with these arcane issues, it can be handy to know what exactly all of those 505 hits really mean in your web stat report. Or to be able to ask pertinent questions of the hosting services your considering to make certain they know what they're doing. If you are handling the maintenance in-house or are having meetings about dynamic options and e-commerce on Apache servers, you would do well to add Webmaster in a NutShell to your essential web reference shelf." --Carolyne Cooper, Elements of Web Style, January 2001

This indispensable book takes all the essential reference information for the Web and pulls it together into one volume. It covers HTML 4.0, CSS, XML, CGI, SSI, JavaScript 1.2, PHP, HTTP 1.1, and administration for the Apache server.
Full Description
Individuals, organizations, and businesses are relying on their web pages to provide and collect information, manage processes, and interact with communities and customers. A reliable, informative, and responsive web site can reduce cost, increase visibility, and create a positive image for the owner of that site.
Behind every successful web page is an overworked and underappreciated webmaster.
Webmasters make sure that the information on a site is accessible and usable; that the site is always available; that performance is good; that users can get the information that they need; and that the site can collect the information it needs to serve those users. These disparate tasks require many different tools and skills. Webmaster in a Nutshell pulls together in a single volume all the essential reference information for webmasters working on UNIX-based web servers.
In this second edition of Webmaster in a Nutshell, we've updated our material to include the latest versions of HTML and Javascript, and also expanded the book to cover the newest technologies emerging on the Web. The book covers:
- HTML 4.0, with special attention to forms, tables and frames
- CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)
- XML, the next-generation markup language for the Web
- CGI, with a chapter dedicated to the Perl module CGI.pm
- JavaScript 1.2
- PHP, the HTML-embedded programming language
- HTTP 1.1, the underlying protocol that drives the Web
- Apache server administration, including Apache modules
- mod_perl, the Apache module for enhancing CGI performance and providing a Perl interface to the Apache API
