Reading Om Malik's Nightmare on Tech Street piece, I wonder if we're actually just waking up from the nightmare. Yes, the abrupt collapse of demand for consumer electronics and their ilk will hurt tech companies--I'm bracing my own for the slowdown--but the icy bath that brings down a killing fever trades pain for gain. In a recent conversation with my... Read more.

Every one is talking about building apps in cloud or moving the apps to cloud. There are plenty of jobs on job boards looking for the people with the skills: "familiarity with cloud" or "expertise in cloud". The latest buzzword is "Cloud Computing". What is Cloud? Why all of sudden Cloud is a buzz? What are my options to move Java app to the Cloud? What are the features and limitations of the Cloud? How IaaS and PaaS will fit in the Cloud? Read details. Find the answers here or read more about cloud computing in our archives.
A year later, the IT industry was in the worst recession that it had faced in fifteen years, a time that became known as the Tech Nuclear Winter. Senior programmers with thirty years of experience and post graduate degrees - people who sat on standards committees boards and often served to shape the industry - could be found at coffee shops "working on their next projects" while waiting for a job to open up. At the Program For the Future event commemorating the 40th anniversary of Doug Englebart's "mother of all demos" in 1968, I was privileged to hear an inspired rant by Alan Kay about the unwillingness of people to work hard to learn new skills. I'm quoting from memory, so the lines below are not exact, and there's no way I can... Read more.
We have more data than ever before, but is there meaning in the noise? Maybe we need a new epistemology for the Internet. Read more.

I first reported a security issue in the AT&T;/Cingular voicemail system on February 1, 2006. Now, after 2.5 years, the LA District Attorney's office has banned AT&T; and T-Mobile from saying that their voicemail systems are secure. Read more.
Next year is the 30th anniversary of The Book of Heroic Failures by Stephen Pile. It's like the Guinness Book of World Records for the clumsy, the forgetful and the just plain confused. Like the civil servant from Andorra who... Read more.
Open Street Map (OSM), the open data mapping project, has grown a lot over the past year. It now has almost 80,000 users and 800 million data points. OSM's data is still freely available, but commercial services around it have sprung up. Cloudmade is a startup that recently moved from the UK to San Francisco to be closer to... Read more.
In this article, I want to further the discussion on how micro-blogging channels may be leveraged by terrorist organizations to obtain real time surveillance and intelligence of their efforts. Read more.
This year there were three legal cases of interest to me that resolved in 2008, each in a positive direction as far as I am concerned. In each, it turned out that the way I hoped and expected that things operated was in fact how things did operate, at least in the reality of the courts. Read more.

The past decade saw many centralized architectures move to distributed ones. Where previously the applications stopped at the server boundary, they moved to three-tier architectures with messaging, and then n-tier architectures. This is the architectural idea behind cloud computing. Read more.
Mixed modal transit routing is coming, but it faces a different kind of data acquisition problem than street routing before it. The data isn't observable, and it's often proprietary. Read more.
I would like to join Elliotte Rusty Harold, James Clark, Tim Bray, Michael Kay and David Carlisle in deprecating or being dismayed by XML 1.0 (fifth edition). The fifth edition loosens up rules about characters that can appear in names. This means that anyone who actually creates such documents will find they are not accepted by approx 100% of XML parsers out in the world, as of now. Guaranteed non-interoperability in the name of better inclusiveness. Read more.
