Program Chairs
Jesse Robbins is CEO of OpsCode and a recognized expert in Infrastructure, Web Operations, and Emergency Management. He serves as co-chair of the Velocity Web Performance & Operations Conference and contributes to the O'Reilly Radar. Prior to co-founding OpsCode, he worked at Amazon.com with a title of “Master of Disaster” where he was responsible for Website Availability for every website bearing the Amazon brand. Jesse is a volunteer Firefighter/EMT and Emergency Manager, and he led a task force deployed in Operation Hurricane Katrina.
Steve Souders Steve Souders works at Google on web performance and open source initiatives. His book High Performance Web Sites explains his best practices for performance along with the research and real-world results behind them. Steve is the creator of YSlow, Cuzillion, and Hammerhead. He is co-chair of Velocity and co-founder of the Firebug Working Group. He teaches CS193H High Performance Web Sites at Stanford, and frequently speaks at conferences including OSCON, The Ajax Experience, SXSW, and Web 2.0 Expo.
Committee Members
John Allspaw is currently Operations Engineering Manager at Flickr and the author of "The Art of Capacity Planning: Scaling Web Resources". Prior to Flickr, he's worn infrastructure and web ops hats at Friendster, Salon.com, InfoWorld, and MacWorld. In a previous life, he was a modeling and simulation engineer in the field of vehicle crashworthiness research. This means he's seen lots of things crash, not all of them servers and routers.
Artur Bergman, hacker and technologist at-large, is the director of engineering at Wikia, supporting its mission to compile and index the world's knowledge. He is also an enthusiastic apologist for federated identity and a board member of the OpenID Foundation. His current interests include semantic search, large scale infrastructure, open source development, federated instant messaging, neurotransmitters, and the future of cyborgs.
Scott Ruthfield is the founder of Rooster Park Consulting, focusing on executive technology consulting in the Seattle area, and is currently the interim VP of Development at Virtuoso, a luxury travel services and supply chain provider. Prior to that, he was the VP of Engineering & Technology at WhitePages.com, the world’s most popular people search engine, and led the development of Jiffy, an open-source package for real-world web page instrumentation and measurement. Before joining WhitePages, Scott was at Amazon.com, where he led technology and business strategy in areas including customer reviews, employee blogs, e-mail marketing and the (current) Gold Box.
Eric Schurman is currently a Principal Development Lead at Microsoft's Live Search, where he is responsible for making the site feel as responsive as possible to customers. Prior to that he's written books, written training software, worked for Adobe and Aldus, and run development for Microsoft's home page, Download Center, and various other properties.
Mandi Walls is a Principal System Administrator at AOL, where she is currently responsible for the daily care and feeding of AOL.com. She has also been involved with AOL's Channels, Video, News, and Travel sites. Prior to joining AOL, Mandi supported bioinformatics systems for the National Human Genome Research Center, and taught IT classes in systems management and security. Mandi holds a Master's degree in Computer Science from George Washington University and is pursuing an MBA at UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School. In her spare time, Mandi is a technology tutor for the Fairfax County Library in Reston, Virginia, and is a member of Kiwanis International.
