My talk last week at Web 2.0 Expo in New York was entitled "Web Meets World." I covered this theme from two directions: The idea that in the future, Web 2.0 "collective intelligence" applications will be driven by sensors rather than people typing on keyboards. What's more, this idea is also key to "enterprise 2.0." Dell's integrated supply chain,... Open beats Closed: Best Buy’s new APIs
Best Buy is a pioneer when it comes to unleashing the talent of their own staff; from the Loop Marketplace that allows employees to submit ideas for Digg-style ranking AND funding across divisions (for example an HR manager can fund an idea from a customer service employee) to their use of prediction markets and their support of the employee-driven social network, Blue Shirt Nation. Two weeks ago, I was still searching for the "perfect" Twitter client for the Macintosh. Theodore Tso: How the LSB Helps You Behind the Scenes
The Linux Standard Base (LSB) is the Rosetta Stone for Linux distributions, it establishes a common set of libraries and tools that any Linux application can use safely, and be assured of running correctly. The Linux Foundation is the keeper of the LSB, and recently we spoke with Theodore Tso, who helps tend the LSB, about what goes into keeping it healthy, and how it benefits ISVs, distribution maintainers, and end users alike. Cupcake champions at an Ignite event? More like cupcake decorating... and it was a hit. From AC/DC battery cupcakes to a replica of the Golden Gate Bridge (albeit not to scale) to the winning iPhone cupcakes. This Ignite event was a huge success and kicked off the start of the first ever Web 2.0 Expo conference in NYC. Video now available - iPhone Forensics 101: Bypassing the iPhone Passcode
Last week, Jonathan Zdziarski, author of the just-released iPhone Forensics, delivered a much-talked about presentation on bypassing the iPhone 3G passcode, in which he revealed some little known "security" issues pertaining to that device. From Tim O'Reilly
"User groups represent the spirit of the frontier, a community getting together to do things that no individual ought to have to do alone. The pioneers of the American west got together for barn raisings, cattle roundups, and the occasional party. The pioneers of new technology get together for installfests, new user training and support, and just plain fun. Being part of a user group is the best way to get more out of your computer, and lets you make friends while you're at it."
