O'Reilly Media | Spreading the knowledge of innovators
Yes, Web 2.0 Expo in New York City is the place to be. Yet you can view many of the keynote presentations from the comfort of your own home or office on blip.tv. You'll find Gary Vaynerchuk (Wine Library) talking about Building Personal Brand Within the Social Media Landscape, Jason Fried (founder of 37signals), presenting on High Order Bit, Maria Thomas (Etsy's new CEO), talking about The DIY Guide to Growing a Company, and much, much more.
Tim O'Reilly, founder of O'Reilly Media, didn't mince words as he addressed the crowd this morning at Web 2.0 Expo in New York City. As CNET reported today, he said: "You have to conclude, if you look at the focus of a lot of what you call 'Web 2.0,' the relentless focus on advertising-based consumer models, lightweight applications, we may be living in somewhat of a bubble, and I'm not talking about an investment bubble. (It's) a reality bubble." Indeed, in the wake of Wall Street's tumble and anxiety all around, Tim is asking people to think about what they would do differently and to "work on stuff that matters."
Bonnie Biafore, author O'Reilly's latest book, Quicken 2009: The Missing Manual is a self-described incorrigible tinkerer. "My personal finances have lived in Quicken since the early 90s, so I've had to do a lot of coaxing over the years to get Quicken to do what I want," she says. "My new book is my way of sharing the love." Here Bonnie shares her love of Quicken and her must-have tips and tricks for keeping track of expenses and staying financially afloat during troubled times. Read on to learn Bonnie's secrets and for a chance to win a free copy of her new book.

Last week, Jonathan Zdziarski, author of the just-released iPhone Forensics, delivered a much-talked about presentation on bypassing the iPhone 3G passcode, in which he revealed some little known "security" issues pertaining to that device. Most notable was the fact that the iPhone captures and stores screenshots of any place you visit on the web (using your iPhone, of course). The recording is now ready for viewing. Read on.
Head First Statistics — Wouldn't it be great if there were a statistics book that made histograms, probability distributions, and chi square analysis more enjoyable than going to the dentist? Head First Statistics brings this typically dry subject to life, teaching statistics through engaging, interactive, and thought-provoking material, full of puzzles, stories, quizzes, visual aids, and real-world examples. This book satisfies the requirements for passing the College Board's Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics Exam. Learn more.
O'Reilly's focus has long been on programming issues (or programmer issues) and that focus remains very much in place. However, it is worth understanding how the grief playing out on Wall Street will have a very significant impact upon the IT industry within the next four to six months, even despite the fact that up until now the contagion seems largely to have remained contained in the financial sector.
Where 2.0: The State of the Geospatial Web — The GeoWeb is a rapidly evolving Web 2.0 market of innovative data and software applications—including location-based services, social software, and even augmented reality—for both the web and mobile devices. Propelled by the new location-aware iPhone, the GeoWeb is hurtling into the mainstream. This report maps out the new generation of geo products and services, identify the major players, and show how your business can leverage the power of Where 2.0. Learn more.
With the U.S. now accounting for only about a third of all Facebook users, we are starting to see a gradual shift away from its original demographic of college-age users (18-25): 46% of all users are 18-25 years old, down from 51% in late May. The number of users in the 18-25 segment is growing, but at a slower pace...
Last week I
wrote about a privacy-related controversy
and extolled the
Code of Ethics
that proposed by my colleague Brian McConnell.
I heard shortly afterward from the other side of the controversy,
Virtual PBX,
so I want to air their point of view here and wrap up what I've been
told.
The alternative to HTML 5 is for websites based on cross-platform APIs: not just browser sniffing but platform sniffing. ...As well as seeing HTML 5 as a way to ward off the evils of proprietary formats, we need to figure out how to use it to neutralize the negative impacts of these formats: if HTML 5 and CSS can be augmented in ways that take advantage of slicker rendering and interaction by the specific-vendor platforms, then their presence becomes a net gain not a challenge to interoperability.
Head First Ajax gives you an up-to-date perspective that lets you see exactly what you can do -- and has been done -- with Ajax. Using the unique and highly effective visual format that makes Head First titles popular, this book offers a big picture overview to introduce Ajax, and then explores the use of individual Ajax components -- including the JavaScript event model, DOM, XML, JSON, and more -- as it progresses. I enjoy exposure to new world views, the feeling of one's brain being stretched to fit a new frame. For that reason, I enjoyed Daniel Suarez's talk to the Long Now Foundation, entitled "Daemon: Bot-Mediated Realities". You can listen to the talk as I did, or read Paul Saffo's summary. Suarez sees a world in which bots run everything from...
