I’m very pleased and proud to announce that my newest book, Programming .NET 3.5, is available, and more important that it may be the most unusual book I’ve ever written. As noted in my primary blog it was our theory; generated long before I started work at Microsoft, that while there was good reason to write what I call “silo” books on each of the .NET technologies (e.g., WPF, WCF, etc.) there was a coherence to the entire Microsoft framework that was potentially missed by that approach.

Our other theory was that .NET 3.5 (broadly defined) was the first version of .NET to fully facilitate the development of n-tier applications and MVC (imagine our shock when Microsoft developed the MVC library for ASP.NET!)

This book was also a blast to write, and even more exceptional, my co-author, Alex Horovitz, launched his own writing career out of it, quickly following with Programming ASP.NET MVC to be released shortly.

It will come as no surprise that I’m always looking for on-ramps for aspiring Silverlight programmers. This month there are a few particularly attractive ones.

First, I’ve put together a new, if somewhat idiosyncratic roadmap for acquiring the tools and working your way through our learning materials.

Second, I’ve launched a series of live presentations delivered over the net, every other Wednesday, and then downloadable on demand.

Since the first one was not recorded I’ve redone it as a video and it will be posted soon.

The presentations are the result of my re-thinking the entire approach to presentations, which I muse about here.

I hope you’ll find all of this helpful.

This is obviously not a high-volume destination website. Ever though it mostly serves as a personal notation system for me to keep track of interesting free software and web services, there are a few people who visit here now and then. And, the statistician in me finds it interesting to track the numbers.

I usually don’t mention a service I haven’t tried yet. But, I’m almost ready to hit the sack and don’t want to start playing with anything just now. And, yet, this service seemed interesting enough to blog it as a kind of reminder to myself to try it out tomorrow.

I sometimes use my iPod video’s Sleep Timer. One nice side effect I found is that the Logitech speakers I use also turn off it is on battery power (vs. plugged into a wall socket) after the iPod shuts down. One oddity, though, is what happens the next time I turn the iPod on, it […]

If you’ve used McAfee’s SiteAdvisor to flag potentially dangerous web searches, the new Yahoo/McAfee dangerous web site team-up will look familiar to you. I went to Yahoo Search and searched for free downloads since I was pretty sure it would result in a few dangerous sites being listed in the search results.
First Moonlight Release - Miguel de Icaza

Today we are making the first public release of Moonlight, supporting the Silverlight 1.0 profile for Linux. The release comes in two forms:

* No-media codecs supported, but easy to install: head to https://www.go-mono.com/moonlight and click on the cute installer for Moonlight. This currently hosts builds for Linux x86 and x86-64 for Firefox.
* Source-code compilation, but you can optionally compile FFMpeg codecs yourself. To do this, download our moon-0.6.tar.bz2. And follow the build instructions.

More goodness at the above linked entry on Miguel’s blog.

Congratulations, Mono Project developers!
