In his morning column, New York Times technology writer David Pogue asks if the world needs another broswer? Although that question remains unanswered, the author of "iPhone: The Missing Manual" found much to like in Google's new open source browser project. Dux Raymond Sy, author of O'Reilly's upcoming SharePoint for Project Management, also took Google Chrome out for a spin and found three reasons to be delighted. In this episode, Deke makes the startling claim that Illustrator, a complex piece of software that costs hundreds of dollars, is better than an $8 Spirograph. Using nothing but half an ellipse and a few live, editable effects, Deke shows you how to construct something truly extraordinary. "Trust me on this one. Artist, non-artist, proficient with Illustrator, never even heard of the program -- I don't care if you live in Antarctica, you have no access to electricity, you haven't seen sunlight in 45 days -- oh my God, what are you, a penguin? -- you're gonna wanna watch this!"
"There's a huge security problem in the latest iPhone 2.0.2," writes Jesus Diaz in a story on Gizmodo, "a very simple trick gives anyone full access to your cellphone private information in Mail, SMS, Contacts, and even Safari."
But this is nothing new, says iPhone hacker Jonathan Zdziarski, author of the upcoming iPhone Forensics. "The iPhone passcode was cracked long ago," he explains, leaving the iPhone with certain inherent security flaws. Read more.

I have to confess that one of the social networking tools I find most valuable is Goodreads. (It's a close second to Twitter, and way ahead of Facebook, Friendfeed, or Dopplr.) Unlike twitter, where I follow hundreds of people (possible because of twitter's minimalism) and am followed by thousands, on Goodreads, I follow and am followed by a small...
I just saw the trailer for Sony's new game The Last Guy. In it you run around a city trying to lead people to safety with a top down view reminiscent of Google Earth or Yahoo! Maps or Live Maps. People follow you around the city creating an ever longer line, while you try to avoid monsters. As your...

Andy Hertzfeld, one of the original designers of the Macintosh, is also the author of the book Revolution in the Valley, which tells the tale of the birth of the Mac. As the Mac approaches its 25th anniversary in January, Andy spent some time talking about how the Mac has changed over time, how a group of highly talented individuals was able to come together as a team to create it, why Xerox let it get away, and how life might have been different if Steve Jobs hadn't left the company for more than 10 years.
