Apple Design Awards 2008 Official Rules

The APPLE DESIGN AWARDS 2008 Contest (“Contest”), which is sponsored by Apple Inc. (“Apple”), begins Tuesday, April 15, 2008 and ends 5 PM (Pacific Time) Monday, May 12, 2008. The Contest recognizes outstanding achievement and excellence in software design for Mac OS X, iPhone OS, and Safari on iPhone.
Section I: Eligible Countries (“Countries”)
The Contest is open to eligible contestants from:
United States, Canada, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, People’s Republic of China, Philippines, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
Section II: Eligible Contestants
The Contest is open to individuals or companies that are software developers (“Commercial developer”) who:
- Are Registered iPhone Developers or have membership in the Apple Developer Connection or, if applicable, the iPhone Developer Program. To join or learn more about ADC membership, go to https://developer.apple.com/products. To learn more about becoming a Registered iPhone Developer or an iPhone Developer Program member, go to https://developer.apple.com/iphone/program/
- Are legal residents of one of the Countries and/or have a principal place of business in one of the Countries.
- Comply with these Contest Rules. For entries created in collaboration with more than one eligible contestant, each eligible contestant must comply with these Contest Rules.
The Contest is open to students who are software developers (“Student developer”) on their own, who:
- Are Registered iPhone Developers or have membership in the Apple Developer Connection. To join or learn more about ADC membership, go to https://developer.apple.com/products. To learn more about becoming a Registered iPhone Developer go to https://developer.apple.com/iphone/program/.
- Are legal residents of one of the Countries.
- Are enrolled as a full-time student at a higher education institution for the current academic year.
- Are not currently obligated by any verbal or written contracts with any commercial software developer or their school to participate in the development and/or release of a commercial (for-profit) software product.
- Have not received post-graduate offers of employment from Apple and Apple affiliates with starting dates on or before May 12, 2008.
- Comply with these Contest Rules. For entries created in collaboration with more than one eligible contestant, each eligible contestant must comply with these Contest Rules.
Employees of Apple, Apple affiliates, subsidiaries, resellers, advertising and promotional agencies, and their immediate families are not eligible to participate in the Contest.
Section III: Contest Categories
Subject to the following requirements, eligible entries may be entered into more than one category. Upon Contest entry, you will need to choose the category or categories on the Contest entry form that best matches your Contest entry’s strengths.
Categories in which Commercial developers who are Apple Developer Connection members may participate include:
- BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD APPLICATION - This category highlights trendsetting, innovative, best-of-breed Mac OS X Leopard applications. Entries in this category must be Release Versions (defined below).
- BEST NEW MAC OS X LEOPARD GAME - This category highlights games introduced on Mac OS X Leopard after June 2007 which take full advantage of relevant Leopard technologies and offer the best entertainment value to all ages. Entries in this category must be Release Versions.
- BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD USER EXPERIENCE - Highlights excellence in design, aesthetics, ease of use, compelling use of animation, and pervasive integration with built-in Mac OS X Leopard system services and sharing technologies. Entries in this category must be Release Versions.
- BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD GRAPHICS AND MEDIA APPLICATION - This category highlights best-of-breed Mac OS X Leopard graphics and media solutions providing unparalleled functionality, performance, innovation, and stunning visuals and/or audio. Entries in this category must be Release Versions.
- BEST iPHONE WEB APPLICATION - This category highlights web applications designed specifically for Safari on iPhone which offer iPhone users innovative, compelling, valuable, and highly desirable capabilities. Entries in this category must be Web Release Versions.
Categories in which Commercial or Student developers who are Registered iPhone Developers may participate include:
- iPHONE DEVELOPER SHOWCASE - Highlights innovative and compelling new iPhone applications, built using the Beta iPhone SDK. Entries in this category must be pre-release, feature complete versions built with the Beta iPhone SDK which run within the iPhone Simulator or on a provisioned* iPhone or iPod touch. Apple reserves the right to award more than one winning entry in this category. *You must have entered into the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement (“Program Agreement”) with Apple to provision an iPhone or iPod touch.
Categories in which Student Developers may participate include:
- BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD STUDENT PRODUCT - This category highlights Mac OS X Leopard applications developed exclusively by Student Developers. Entries in this category must be Release Versions.
Apple reserves the right to declare a Contest entry a winner in any category independent of the category or categories in which it was entered. Apple reserves the right to award more than one winning entry in the iPHONE DEVELOPER SHOWCASE category.
Section IV: Judging
- PLATFORM INNOVATION - This criterion measures new or substantially improved functional characteristics, technical abilities, efficiency, productivity, and quality.
- USER EXPERIENCE - Measures elegance, organization, attractiveness, polish, attention-to-detail, efficiency, and ease of use, appropriate and compelling use of animation, and overall compliance with the Mac OS X Human Interface Guidelines or iPhone Human Interface Guidelines, or where applicable with the iPhone Human Interface Guidelines for Web Applications. The Mac OS X Human Interface Guidelines can be found online at https://developer.apple.com/documentation/UserExperience/ Conceptual/OSXHIGuidelines/XHIGIntro/chapter_1_section_1.html. The iPhone Human Interface Guidelines and the iPhone Human Interface Guidelines for Web Applications can be found online at https://developer.apple.com/iphone and https://developer.apple.com/webapps/ respectively.
- TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION - Measures advanced, effective, innovative, and relevant use of differentiating Mac OS X technologies or their iPhone OS equivalents, such as Quartz Compositions, Core Video or QTKit, Core Audio, Core Animation, and WebKit.
- PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATION - Measures performance tuning, optimal memory usage, minimal startup time, use of optimized libraries, and where appropriate the use of threading.
- AUTOMATION - This criterion only applies to entries in Mac OS X Leopard related categories and measures the extent an application can be extended and automated via Mac OS X’s Scripting Bridge, Applescript, or Automator.
- SHARING AND INTEGRATION - Measures integration with relevant built-in iPhone applications such as Mail, Maps, Safari, Phone, and Camera, or built-in Mac OS X system services such as Spotlight and Quick Look, and frameworks including AddressBook, InstantMessage, Sync Services, and CalendarStore and, if appropriate, the degree to which content can be used on iPhone, iPod, and Apple TV and exchanged with other applications.

Section V: Eligible Entries
Eligible Contest entries in the BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD APPLICATION, BEST NEW MAC OS X LEOPARD GAME, BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD USER EXPERIENCE, BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD GRAPHICS AND MEDIA APPLICATION, or BEST MAC OS X STUDENT PRODUCT categories:
- Must be the English language version of a complete, self-contained application for Mac OS X. Device drivers, code libraries, development frameworks, or kernel extensions entered on their own are unacceptable and will be disqualified.
- “Release Version”. Submission must be the release version. Submissions of pre-release versions will be disqualified. Release Version means your entry is released and Available to the general public as of the date you enter the Contest. “Available” means that customers have been informed of, or can obtain information about, your Contest entry via email, press release, product web page, or other similar type of public communication, and can purchase, download, or otherwise obtain or access an identical version of your Contest entry.
- Must run natively on Intel-based Macintosh computers.
- Must execute directly on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
- Must be a major point release version newer than than previous Apple Design Awards submissions, if applicable.
- Must be accompanied by any registration codes, serial numbers, or software protection dongles required to activate full functionality.
- May use Open Source technology which is publicly available under an Open Source Initiative (OSI)-approved open source license.
- Must include demo files and/or demo scripts and/or other materials useful for product demonstration purposes. These items will be used by the Contest judges for evaluation purposes and by Apple to illustrate product functionality if your Contest entry is a winner.
Eligible Contest entries in the BEST iPHONE WEB APPLICATION category:
- Must be the English language version of a web application designed specifically for Safari on iPhone.
- “Web Release Version.” Submissions of URLs which access pre-release versions of your Contest entry will be disqualified. Web Release Version means your Contest entry is Feature Complete and Available and accessible to the general public as of the date you enter the Contest. “Available” means that customers have been informed of, or can obtain information about, your Contest entry via email, press release, web site, or other similar type of public communication, and can gain free access to, or purchase access or membership to, your web application. “Feature Complete” means the feature set and capabilities of your Contest entry are what you plan to make available to customers, with the exception of bug fixes expected during the final stages of your development cycle.
- Must run within Safari for iPhone.
- Must be accompanied by any usernames, passwords, registration codes, or serial numbers required to access and activate full functionality of your web application.
- Must provide access to demo content and/or demo scripts and/or other materials useful for product demonstration purposes using the login details you provide. These items will be used by the Contest judges for evaluation purposes and by Apple to illustrate product functionality if your Contest entry is a winner.
- Must be Available for review at the time of Contest entry.
Eligible Contest entries in the iPHONE DEVELOPER SHOWCASE category:
- Must be the English language version of a complete, self-contained application for the iPhone Simulator or the iPhone OS.
- Entries which are in violation of the Registered iPhone Developer Terms and Conditions or the iPhone SDK Agreement or, if applicable, the iPhone Developer Program Agreement, are unacceptable and will be disqualified. The Registered iPhone Developer Terms and Conditions are made available to you when you become a Registered iPhone Developer. The iPhone Developer SDK Agreement is available to Registered iPhone Developers through the Downloads section of the iPhone Dev Center. The iPhone Developer Program Agreement is provided to you upon acceptance by Apple into the iPhone Developer Program.
- Must be the pre-release, Feature Complete version. Pre-release version means your Contest entry is not yet available to the general public as of the date you enter the Contest. “Feature Complete” means the feature set and capabilities of your Contest entry are what you plan to make available to customers, with the exception of bug fixes expected during the final stages of your development cycle. Prototype or "proof-of-concept" applications will be ignored.
- Must run natively on iPhone, iPod touch, or within the iPhone Simulator.
- Must be built and developed using the tools and frameworks provided in the Beta iPhone SDK.
- Must be accompanied by any required registration codes or serial numbers required to activate full functionality.
- Must be in full compliance with the Registered iPhone Developer Terms and Conditions, and the iPhone SDK Agreement, and, if applicable, the iPhone Developer Program Agreement.
- Must include demo files and/or demo scripts and/or other materials useful for product demonstration purposes. These items will be used by the Contest judges for evaluation purposes and by Apple to illustrate product functionality if your Contest entry is a winner.
Section VI: Submission Instructions
Contest entries must be received on or before the Contest ending time and date. Entries received after this deadline, for whatever reason, will be disqualified. No exceptions will be made.
- Entries in the BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD APPLICATION, BEST NEW MAC OS X LEOPARD GAME, BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD USER EXPERIENCE, BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD GRAPHICS AND MEDIA APPLICATION, or BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD STUDENT PRODUCT categories must be submitted electronically via ftp (File Transport Protocol). Required demo files, sample documents, or scripts should be included in a separate .zip archive, named "Demo Extras.zip", and submitted with your Contest entry. Do not password protect or encrypt your Contest entry or any of these .zip archives.
- Entries in the iPHONE DEVELOPER SHOWCASE category must be built and submitted using the following instructions:
- Open your project in Xcode.
- Choose Project > Set Active Build Configuration > Release.
- If your application only runs in the iPhone Simulator:
- Set the Active SDK within Xcode by choosing Project > Set Active SDK > "Simulator - iPhone OS 2.0".
- Skip to step E. - If your application has been tested and run on a provisioned* iPhone or iPod touch:
*NOTE: You must have entered into the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement with Apple to submit a device-based application.
- Set the Active SDK within Xcode by choosing Project > Set Active SDK > "Device - iPhone OS 2.0".
- Create a Provisioning Profile in the iPhone Developer Portal that contains the UDID
<26756dec0947fddda2aef3cfd996cb071c9aacc1>. This is the UDID for the iPhone used to judge your submission.
- Download the Provisioning Profile file onto your desktop.
- Ensure the Code Signing Identity in the Project Build Settings is set to your name (or the appropriate code-signing identity). - Choose Build > Build and solve build errors/warnings.
- Choose Run > Run to ensure your application runs as expected on one of your own provisioned devices or within the iPhone Simulator.
- In the Groups & Files list, open the Products group, control-click on your application, and select "Reveal in Finder". This will reveal your application by switching to the Finder.
- Select your application (the file with the .app suffix) and drag the application to the Desktop.
- Select your application and, if you chose "Device - iPhone OS 2.0" as your Active SDK in step C, select the Provisioning Profile file (hold down the shift key and select each icon).
- Choose File > Compress.
- Entries in the BEST iPHONE WEB APPLICATION category must provide an access URL in the Contest entry form, accompanied by any required usernames, passwords, registration codes, or serial numbers required to access and activate full functionality.
- If your Contest entry, entered in any Contest category, requires special hardware to function properly, mail or courier it, to:

All mailed or couriered items must be received on or before the Contest ending time and date. Contest Entries associated with mailed or couriered items received after this deadline, for whatever reason, will be disqualified. No exceptions will be made.
For identification purposes, all mailed or couriered items sent to the above address must be accompanied by a printed copy of the Contest entry Confirmation provided upon successful Contest entry.
- Upon receipt, Contest Entries (and any special hardware and/or 3rd party software mailed or couriered to the above address) become the property of Apple without monetary compensation to the contestant(s), and will not be returned. Ownership of the underlying intellectual property of the Contest entry remains the property of the contestant subject to Apple’s rights to reprint, display, reproduce, perform, and exhibit the Contest entry for the purpose of advertising and/or promoting this Contest and other Apple product and services.
The new archive just created has an additional .zip suffix and is the file that must be submitted electronically via ftp (File Transport Protocol). Demo files, sample documents, or scripts should be included in a separate .zip archive, named "Demo Extras.zip", and submitted with your Contest Entry. Do not password protect or encrypt your Contest Entry or any of these .zip archives.
Section VII: Prizes
The purpose of this Contest is to recognize outstanding developer achievement. This is not a publicity Contest or lottery. Only one prize will be awarded to each of the winning Contest Entries in each Contest category, with the exception of the iPHONE DEVELOPER SHOWCASE category in which Apple reserves the right to award more than one winning entry, regardless of whether the Contest entry was produced by a single individual or through the collaboration of a group of individuals.

- Each Winner and Runner-up in all categories except the iPHONE DEVELOPER SHOWCASE will receive a trophy and the right to use the Apple Design Awards logo on packaging and manuals for the Contest entry as well as on the winning Contest entry’s related online and printed advertising and promotional materials. Winners and Runner-ups in the iPHONE DEVELOPER SHOWCASE category will receive a trophy and the right to use the Apple Design Awards logo on the winning Contest entry’s web site. The award logo art may be used for the entered version of the winning Contest entry only; it may not be used for subsequent releases. Winners and Runner-ups must use the logo art in a manner consistent with Apple’s graphics policy and guidelines, which will be provided.
- Winners and Runner-ups will be announced at the WWDC 2008. Winners and Runner-ups need not be present to win. Winners and Runner-ups will also be notified by email or phone at Apple’s discretion prior to the WWDC 2008. Prizes are non-transferable. There will be no substitution of prizes and no cash awarded in lieu of awards. Prize configurations are not customizable. Winners are responsible for all applicable taxes. Apple reserves the right to substitute the entire prize or any portion of it for a prize of equal or greater value. Delivery times are subject to product availability and determined exclusively by Apple. All prizes and trophies will be awarded. The award of any prize or trophy to any is subject to Apple’s receipt of a fully executed AFFIRMATION OF ELIGIBILITY, OWNERSHIP OF SUBMISSION, RELEASE AND COMPLIANCE STATEMENT (“AFFIRMATION”) from the Winner and Runner-up which includes but is not limited to a representation and warranty that the Winner or Runner-Up is the rightful owner of the Contest entry and has not infringed any third party rights. The decisions of the judges are final in all respects. Apple reserves the right to disqualify any Contest entry for any reason. Eligible contestants will not be notified if their entry is disqualified.
- All prizes must be claimed within sixty (60) days of the end of WWDC 2008 or be forfeited. Receipts relating to airfare and accommodations must be submitted to Apple within sixty (60) days of the end of WWDC 2008 or be forfeited. - All federal, state, provincial, local, or other jurisdictional laws and regulations apply. This Contest is void where prohibited or otherwise restricted by law. By entering this Contest and/or accepting prize the eligible contestant grants permission to Apple or anyone authorized by Apple to use statements, quotes, testimonials, photographs, designs, models, software, and/or any other material(s) provided by eligible contestant as part of the Contest entry, as well as eligible contestant’s name, photograph, likeness, and, if applicable, the name of eligible contestant’s company and afiliation, for advertising, and/or promotional purposes without any additional compensation to eligible contestant unless prohibited by law. Ownership of the underlying intellectual property of the Contest entry remains the property of the eligible contestant subject to Apple’s rights to reprint, display, reproduce, perform, and exhibit the Contest entry solely for the purpose of advertising and/or promoting this Contest. By accepting prize, winner agrees to hold Apple and its respective directors, officers, employees and assigns, harmless against any and all claims and liability arising out of use of prize. Winner assumes all liability for any injury or damage caused, or claimed to be caused, by participation in this promotion or use/redemption of any prize. Eligible contestants agree to be bound by the Contest Rules and the decisions of the judges.

- A list of Contest winners will be made available via https://developer.apple.com/wwdc/ada by no later than the end of WWDC 2008.
- Apple does not accept or consider unsolicited ideas, including ideas new or improved products or technologies. Please do not send any non-public, original creative artwork, suggestions or other works as part of your Contest entry. If, despite our request that you not send us your ideas, you still send them, then regardless of what your submission (or any correspondence accompanying your submission) says, you agree that: (1) your ideas will automatically become the property of Apple, without compensation to you, and (2) Apple can use the ideas for any purpose and in any way, even give them to others.
