I want to give a shout-out to Apple Insider for a stellar series of “Road to Mac OS X Leopard” articles detailing changes coming in the any-day-now update. They offer a layer of depth and context well beyond what you can find on the official Leopard site. Not content with… read moreSeptember 07 2007
If you’d like to get your weather forecasts in iCal, head on over to Weather Underground, find your city, and check out the top right-hand of the page for the ICAL icon. There’s also an RSS feed. I don’t have any other ical-format calendaring apps handy, but this might well… read moreSeptember 03 2007
I’m writing this from the new MarsEdit 2.0, just released by Red Sweater Software. It’s like a familiar friend shows up for dinner and has transformed into a gourmet cook. After Daniel Jalkut took over development of the app from Brent Simmons, he kept up a steady supply of… read moreAugust 26 2007

Recently I had an Apache access log file on a remote server that I wanted to archive. However, it was 3GB, and /usr/bin/zip refused to even admit the behemoth’s existence. First idea that came to mind was splitting the file into smaller chunks that zip could deal with. For some reason,… read moreNetNewsWire and MarsEdit updated

Two of what might be termed “venerable” (in computer years) Mac OS X applications have been updated today, apparently coincidentally. ;) Brent Simmons and NewsGator released a major 3.0 update to the popular NetNewsWire with crazy amounts of spiffy new features. And a former Simmons app, MarsEdit (now handled admirably by Daniel… read moreMay 11 2007
This is one of those “Discovered By Accident” tips that I happened upon today in OmniOutliner 3.0 whilst futzing with the Inspectors. For those unfamiliar with the program, there are five Inspectors — Appearance, Row, Column Type, Document, and Style Attributes — that can be interchangeably docked together or viewed as… read moreApril 05 2007

New licenses are $24.95, but they have provided… read moreLex: Project based informating management

Cool tip discovered just now whilst watching a video podcast in iTunes. The overlay controller that shows up when you mouse over a movie window, like this, can be moved by clicking in one of the non-control areas and dragging. Handy for when there’s info being obscured, but you’d like to… read moreMarch 12 2007
“Colors and Prompts in BASH” is a quick how-to on putting some color and utility into the otherwise austere command line prompt for the popular shell. Bourne Again Shell offers a lot of power, flexiblity and fun. Many new Unix users do not realize the flexibility of the shell environment;… read moreMarch 03 2007
