Good Search, Better Search and Ugly Search, November 13 2007

Today search plays a prominent role and optimizing the website has become a credible skill. This pdf talks about what SEO means and later gets into the internal tricks and required technical knowledge base. It talks about search engines with a special focus on Google and later gets into page ranks and talks various factors which contribute to it and also effect it. It has some descriptions and links to web based content which makes it sound informative and helpful. At the end includes some best practices and concludes with do's and dont's.
A Good Overview, March 02 2007

SEO is a highly competitive industry in online marketing. That said, any decent webmaster can learn the basics to get their site ranked above someone who was given no thought to being well-placed in search engines. The problem, of course, is learning the "tricks of the trade."
Harold Davis has put together a concise yet thorough summary of most things you need to do to be well ranked by search engines. Much of the information he shares, you could find on dozens of different blogs, but scattered in fragments that would take you a fair amount of time to compile. For this I give Harold props for picking out the best topics to include, and explaining them in an ion that the principle is true, though you may neeasy to read and informative fashion.
SEO is a very difficult topics to, because so many of the techniques you discuss can quickly become outdated. Whether you consider this good or bad, most of the techniques discussed are presented in a high enough level fashed to figure out some specifics on your own on how to apply it. If you're looking for a step-by-step how-to book, this isn't it. If you're looking for a guide of the things you need to consider and how to accomplish them, this is it.
Though most of the topics included in the shortcut would be nothing new to an experienced online marketer, there may be a few tidbits that he could pick up or may have forgotten in your recent activities. For a beginner, this book is well worth its cheap price. Save yourself the time and effort of hunting down the same information across the Internet, and then build on it from there. I would definitely recommend this book well in advance and then some of the overhyped e-books published by individuals that are just looking to make a buck. At least you know with O'Reilly behind this title, it is coming from a reputable source.

Search Engine Optimization Book, January 02 2007

It ws interesting to read this book. It is a good book for beginners, but surely if you want to become an expert in Search Engine Optimization, then Internet is your best book.
Most of the books on technologies like Search Engine Optimization become obsolete the moment they are launched into the market. Search Engine Optimization is a constant evolving technology. Several search engines constantly update their algorithms, and other search mechanisms every single month. So this book will be quite beneficial for the beginners, but if you want to become an expert, you have to rely on latest forums, and websites to catch up with seo technology.

Search Engine Opts or should I say I got ripped off, November 07 2006

I am not going to waste time, I will be blunt the book was not what I was looking for. The fact is I found better information for free. I was really hoping for something much better but the fact is this book really was geared to newbies..
I would have to say stay far away from this book because there is much better information online for free....
Even if your a newbie you could find something so much better and not pay a dime...
I would of been nice to see black hat vs white hat tactics...
There are tons of things left out and tons of things that should have been in it..
the book was ok but not if you are a novice..
i have to say I was hoping from more with the oreilly book...
thats all i have to say..

SEO--short for Search Engine Optimization--is the art, craft, and science of driving web traffic to web sites. Whether your web site depends on broad, general traffic, or high-quality, targeted traffic, this PDF has the tools and information you need to draw more traffic to your site, and build your bottom line. You?ll learn how to effectively use PageRank and Google itself--effective use of SEO means understanding how Google works: how to boost placement in Google search results, how not to offend Google, and how best to use paid Google programs. You?ll also learn how to best organize your web pages and web sites, apply SEO analysis tools, establish effective SEO best practices, and much more. ISBN: 0-596-52786-1, 41 pages, $9.99 US, $12.99 CA https://www.oreilly.com/catalog/seo/ ?
Everything is true except that you ?learn how to effectively use PageRank and Google itself?. A number of the learning issues end up in ?just keep trying different things and then check Google later to see if that worked?. I think it is important to know that tweaking, trying, miscalculating, recalculating, and checking back later are the only ways we know right now to handle some issues on Google, but they are not very effective. You could be tweaking and trying for days or longer. Some of the most important lessons learned in this book are the ones that let you know you are going into no man?s land with no light at the end of the tunnel, just like everyone else trying for SEO.
My experience agreed with everything Mr. Davis wrote except for his optimal web page length range of 100-250 words. My experience is that 200-300 words would be the best range. Less than 200 words causes SEO problems unless the page has 10-20 photos with 10 word explanations: ?Aunt Martha at Martha?s Vineyard looking hopefully for Martha Stewart?.
Some of the topics covered include Search Engine Understanding, Site Traffic, PageRank, Links, Syndication, Page Design, Tools, and Pitfalls. Best Practices is probably the best chapter starting on page 37. The rest of the book needs to be clearly understood before you get to SEO that Works. The chapters are written clearly, if briefly. I like that about this book. No long winded explanations of useless trivia here.
I thought the discriminations made between SEO analysis tools were all straightforward and well defined without going overboard. Free tools that tackle different pieces of the puzzle seem to get you very close to where you need to be for SEO. NickeBot, SERPS, and Meta Tag Analyzer are fine tools with a great price. Three licensed tools discussed in this book include Keyword Elite, Clicktracks, and Seo Administrator. Very valuable knowledge worth your time to read.
The book is in .pdf format. I like that feature. You can buy this online through the O?Reilly shopping cart and then download it.
The 40+ pages were easy to read and understand. I read it in one evening. The book is for someone who is a beginner but more experienced people should look it over to make sure they are up to speed with an expert.
I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book for everyone starting with beginners and moving through the rest of the ranks of experience. Since it is such a quick and easy read, you might be missing something unless you check your knowledge against this expert.
