The UNIX wars are over, and Leopard won.
October 17 2007
Well, you could argue that any one of the OS X ‘Big Cats’ was the winner, simply because Apple has made a user-friendly UNIX system that outperforms most, if not all, other operating systems. Leopard is now fully POSIX conforming making it more inter-operable with other POSIX systems. Some other… read moreJune 12 2007
So is Apple saying “the network is the computer?” It sure seems so. WebKit, the guts of Safari, is open to developers, it lives on the iPhone and now on Windows. Apple is welcoming nearly anyone to hack it and make cool apps with the idea that with more applications… read moreMicrosoft's Surface - have they licensed multi-touch?
May 30 2007
Interesting new technology coming from Microsoft called “Surface”. I see some fairly obvious parallels with the iPhone and multi-touch specifically. Does this mean that Apple is licensing technology to Microsoft? Because presumably multi-touch is patented and owned by Apple. read moreApple opening up more of the black box

A new project at MacForge called BridgeSupport aims to make developing in languages other than Objective-C on Apple’s OS X easier. Objective-C is considered an excellent language and there is no reason not to develop in it but if you have to have a specific bit of perl, python, or… read moreDeveloping with Camel Bones - Perl, Cocoa, OS X goodness

I have been working on a series of articles for the MacDevCenter about alternative windowing systems for Mac OS X and I haven’t been blogging recently. I am kind of hiding out from my editor since I am a little behind with the next article, its coming soon Bruce, I… read moreApril 25 2007
Browsers are everywhere and nowhere, they are getting built into applications so that soon one will not need a stand-alone browser, you can just use whichever app you have at hand or your file browser. The most recent example is Coda from panic software, but it by no means is… read moreApril 04 2007
I blogged the other day about how I couldn’t get iTunes to play some of my music. I connected this with the EU’s “statement of objection” regarding “territorial restrictions.” I wanted Steve Jobs to persuade the record companies that the territorial restrictions were arbitrary and I felt that would solve… read moreHey Steve! You're not done yet!

His Steveness spun his usual magic yesterday supplying substance where there only was talk. Along with EMI, as everyone by now knows, Apple will be selling DRM-free music. Yay! Well done Apple. But we still have some problems, namely that ridiculous artificial anachronism known as a ‘country’ or in modern… read moreApple failing to understand open source
March 22 2007
Apple is failing in Open Source and Free Software. It fails to understand the movement, its principles, and how to leverage it to make money. This would not be such an issue if Apple had not based their operating system OS X on Free Software in the form of NeXT/FreeBSD.… read moreOpen letter to Mark Shuttleworth

Dear Mr. Shuttleworth, Get into the hardware business. I saw you speak in 2004 in Gothenburg Sweden at the EuroPython conference, you gave the keynote (excellent speech) and told the audience about your upcoming project. It was a linux distribution that would be focused on the desktop and come with commercial support,… read morePatents cut both ways for Microsoft

If I held Microsoft stock (which I don’t) I would be furious. Here is Steve Balmer focusing on Linux, making the tired claim that there is so-called Intellectual Property in Linux that violates patents held by Microsoft. Meanwhile Microsoft gets hit with a hefty patent violation of its own; 1.5… read moreNeed a (free) replacement for Word? Try Abiword
February 26 2007
Recently I received the same question from two different people; “What is a good replacement for Word on my Mac?” My brother Nathaniel asked me this when his version of Word stopped working on his new Mac. Microsoft apparently is able to install software on Apple’s new computers providing a… read moreSkype sniping - Open up Skype, your reputation needs it
February 14 2007
I mostly use linux to get my work done, but occasionally I am very glad that my network has Macs on it. It means I can easily buy music from iTunes or use Skype for example. I thought I would try out Skype with video, all the cool kids are… read moreApple to EMI: "You first!" EMI to Apple: "Ok."

Steve Jobs says its the Major’s fault that music, including music from iTunes, has DRM on it. The Majors say it is Apple’s FairPlay that is the problem. Now we may be able to find out. Jobs has been forced out of his protected forcefield and publicly stated that Apple will… read moreEuropean regulators breathe down Apple's neck

A host of European countries are concerned about iTunes music downloads and how they only play on the iPod. The latest to speak up is Holland where the Dutch authorities have said; “What we want from Apple is that they remove the limitations that prevent you from playing a song… read more
