Perl 5 Pocket Reference, 3rd Edition Review, December 03 2001

I've programmed in Perl for about 7 years but only recently bought
the book "Perl 5 Pocket Reference (3rd edition)". It is an amazing
work! I tend to collect the pocket references as an important
addition to my "toolbox". This book surpasses the promise that the
other books mearly approach. It is conscise, well organized and simple.
In fact, it is so well organized it has made some things clear that
have been obscure to me for years.
The attention to quality that Mr. Vromans put into this book means this is
a book that never even makes it to the sweet spot on my bookshelf. It
stays on my desk within arms reach.
Perl 5 Pocket Reference, 3rd Edition Review, December 13 2000

I've said this before and it's actually a phrase stolen from a
good and wise friend of mine: If Larry Wall is god, Johan Vromans
is at least a titan, if not a demi-god with respect to Perl. I have
found this particular pocket reference book to be indispensable. It
becomes more valuable with each revised and updated edition.
Media reviews
"[Consumers] will find the fine 'pocket references' produced by O'Reilly to be compact and affordable."
-- James Cox, The Computer Shelf: Midwest Book Review
"Perl 5 Pocket Reference aspires to give the Perl programmer all the salient information about the language in a very small space and it does that admirably...for ease of use, convenience, and price, this little reference will be the first place I look when I need an answer quick." --E. V. Bell, II, Ed's Internet Books, May 2001
"Excellent book. 5 stars out of 5. I got the Perl 5 Pocket Reference as a gift from the Perl Conference 3.0, and it's been within arm's reach at all times since. It's an invaluable reference for those who find themselves searching through perldocs or Programming Perl for tidbits on a daily basis. Johan Vromans cuts stacks and stacks of Perl documentation down to the most essential at-your-fingertips facts. The book is organized like a series of appendices, covering subjects like command-line options, pragmatic modules, special variables, and regular expressions. That last one is the most dog-eared and thumbed through section of my copy; it boils the sometimes-cryptic regular expression bestiary down to the essentials and is worth list price all by itself. You won't learn Perl from this book. It doesn't take the place of bibles like Programming Perl or Learning Perl, but you'll certainly want to keep it handy if you're an absent-minded programmer like me." --CMonster, Perlmonks.org, July 7, 2000
