Java Network Programming, 2nd Edition Review, February 12 2003

This is a surprisingly easy read for a technical book. I don't often sit down for hours on end reading code examples, but that is exactly what I found myself doing, and didn't miss a step. Java Network Programming is a well-written book, and was succinct enough to keep interest, yet thorough enough to get to all the detailed questions. Highly Recommended.
Java Network Programming, 2nd Edition Review, September 24 2001

Yes, defenitely the book has lots of valuable info. But I feel it is badly
organised. The author seemed to have lost focus here and there. I had read the
first edition as well.
The examples could have been simpler, I feel the same about the language too.

Java Network Programming, 2nd Edition Review, August 06 2001

This book is very good for the starter. But after that it is not clear where the specifics are.
Maybe I am not understanding it well, but it should atleast give me a direction where to go from the spots that there is no further information.
My specific case is in DNS query section.
I have tried many thing to send a DNS query to a location and get the all the information back from the server, information that explained in RFC 1035, header, question, answer, .... and so on.
In general I like the book. I would suggest this book for starters.
Thanks,
Java Network Programming, 2nd Edition Review, July 08 2001

Great book. Includes awesome classes, explains great techniques. Also explores many other aspects. Only other things it needed was a chapter on data structures for client handling and a chapter on security (preventing DoS'ers) and cryptography (secure logons with SHA). Other than that, it was great!
Java Network Programming, 2nd Edition Review, April 04 2001

This book is absolutely definitive. Elliotte Rusty Harold has a knack for explaining Java information so that it is understandable for beginners and highly technical for the savvy. The book is a full compendium of TCP, UDP, Socket Programming, RMI, JavaMail, content handling, W3C/IETF standards, and more. This book and its sister book, Java I/O, are a must for any Java programmer that takes their work seriously.

Java Network Programming, 2nd Edition Review, December 13 2000

Excelent book. Very well organized, I was able to get the explanations and answers I needed in no time. I have a C++ background, extensive socket programming, and no experience with web related protocols (HTTP). The explanations on how to do client side web programming are very clear and precise.
Java Network Programming, 2nd Edition Review, June 09 2000

Excellent Java networking book for beginners (just you know some fundamentals in Java and a bit of programming experience, you can totally understand what it says).
Media reviews
"'Java Network Programming,' by Elliotte Rusty Harold ? Harold does a praiseworthy task of discussing, describing, and illustrating network concepts with Java."
--William F. Gilreath, IEEE Distributed Systems Online, Volume 3, 2002
"a good introductory text. Harold's goal is to explain fundamental network concepts in terms of the Java programming language and show readers how to use it to avoid the messy details of network programming?Harold admirably achieves his goal, and I recommend his book for self-teaching or for instruction in a classroom environment."--William F. Gilreath, dsonline.com
?This book provides a fine introduction to network programming using the Java programming language. It is ideally suited to the newcomers to the world of network programming.?
