Printing: First look at HP’s Photosmart Pro B8850
Posted by: Ben Long @ 12:51 am on 01.25.2008
Over at our sister site, Printerville, Rick LePage has posted a lengthy first look at HP’s upcoming Photosmart Pro B8850, a $549 photo inkjet based upon the battle-tested Photosmart Pro B9180, which first shipped in mid-2006.
The review, which is based upon a late production model, includes discussion of image quality, paper handling, print longevity and performance. Based on our initial findings, we think that the B8850 will be quite successful, offering high-quality color and black-and-white prints for a much lower price than ever before.
As we noted a few weeks ago, Epson is also pushing pigment-based printing down to the magic $500 mark, with the Stylus Photo R1900, which should ship around the same time as the B8850. Both of these printers will go a long way towards bringing long-lasting, pro-quality prints down to a wider audience.

Reader panzeriv88 sends in a very interesting tip that might help in the stormy, wet months of winter. If you end up with a submerged camera, don't give up all hope. If you're careful and take quick action, it might be possible to dry the camera without damaging it. Read on for details. |

Printing: HP announces new pro photo inkjet
Posted by: Rick LePage @ 12:40 am on 01.15.2008
HP today announced the Photosmart Pro B8850, a $550 photo inkjet with eight pigment-based inks, including dual black inks for photo and matte papers and a gray ink for better black-and-white printing. The printer, which is slated to ship in April, looks like it will be a strong contender to Epson's Stylus Photo R1900, a similarly priced photo inkjet that was announced last week.
If you want more info on the B8850, check out the specs and analysis over on Printerville; a first look at the printer should be posted later this week.
Automator Actions: Convert Raw to DNG Automator Action

Adobe's Digital Negative Specification, or DNG format, provides an open standard for the storage of raw camera data. However, since few cameras can store directly into Digital Negative format, if you want to take advantage of DNG, you first need to convert your existing raw files to DNG format using the Adobe DNG Converter. Mac users running OS X 10.4 ("Tiger") or later can ease their conversion tasks using this Automator action, which lets you batch process your DNG conversions, as well as include DNG conversion in a more complex image processing pipeline. This updated version adds Leopard support as well as the ability to convert Sony SR2 files. |

Epson has announced a replacement to its hugely successful Stylus Pro R1800. The new Stylus Pro R1900 is a B-size desktop printer priced at $550. Offering an update to the R1800's original pigment inkset, the R1900 provides a wider gamut, improved longevity and greatly improved quality when printing on glossy paper (and this is saying something, given the R1800's glossy printing prowess). If you want to know more about the R1900, check out the Quick Look at our new sister site, Printerville.net. Printerville is devoted exclusively to digital photo printing, and will feature printer and paper reviews, a library of profiles, and more. |
General: New law for flying with camera batteries

For those of you who travel by air with your cameras, be aware that as of January 1, 2008, it's no longer legal to put lithium ion batteries in checked baggage. From now on, all spare lithium ion batteries must be kept in carry-on bags, with the terminals covered. REVISED: The US Department of Transportation has clarified its rules. Small lithium-ion batteries - like the types that are used in laptop computers and cameras are exempt from the new rules becuase they contain less than 8 grams of lithium. So, you should be able to travel normally, even after the new restrictions. |

Reviews: Canon PowerShot G9

Canon's G-series of high-end point-and-shoot cameras have long offered pro level features in a well-designed point-and-shoot body. Unfortunately, for serious shooters, or SLR shooters looking for a second camera, the last few models have been disappointing due to their lack of raw support. |

In September of 2007 I had the good fortune to assist my friend Steve Simon on a shoot in South Africa. Last year, Steve published an exceptional book on AIDS in Africa, and this year he wanted to return to Africa to photograph grandmothers. In addition to its other troubles, Africa has been ravaged by AIDS, resulting in the loss of entire generations. It very often, then, falls to the gransmothers in the community to raise the children and maintain the social structure. |

In the digital age, it's easy to get so caught up in cool post-production effects and techniques that you forget about what can be done in-camera with the right lens. If you're a long-time film shooter, then you're possibly well-trafficked in the realm of specialized lenses, but if you're new to digital SLRs, then you may know what is possible to achieve inside your camera, with a simple lens change. |

No matter how good your Photoshop skills are, all that maniacal adjustment, correction, and retouching is irrelevant if you can't get your images out of your computer. Whether you're ultimately outputting to print, or as electronic files, Photoshop offers a few hidden features that make file conversion and batch printing much easier. If you do a lot of printing, these features will also help you minimize paper waste when making test prints. Read on for more details. |

Features: Nikon Compressed Raw Format - Lossy or Lossless?
Posted by: Ben Long @ 11:58 am on 10.15.2007

Like most digital SLRs, Nikon's family of digital SLRs offer the ability to shoot in raw mode. However, Nikon's raw offerings provide a twist, in the form of compressed raw. The promise of compressed raw files, of course, is that they take up less space and allow you to store more images on your card. Data compression algorithms fall into two categories: lossy techniques, which degrade the quality of your image; and lossless techniques, which reduce file size without affecting image quality. Nikon users often ask whether the compressed raw format is lossless or lossy, so I decided to look into the question |

Automator Actions: Using the Photoshop Action Pack with Lightroom and Aperture

If you're a Mac user who uses Adobe Lightroom, or Apple Aperture and Photoshop, then you might find my Photoshop Action Pack to be a great add-on, as it allows you to add some automated Photoshop functionality to your Lightroom or Aperture workflow. In addition to facilitating more complex post-production workflows, the Action Pack allows you to create a simple procedure that allows you to easily access Photoshop functionality that is not provided in either of those other two programs. From Photoshop filters, to HDR merges, this technique makes it easy to effectively add Photoshop features to either Lightroom or Aperture. |

Mac OS X 10.4 ships with Automator, a powerful workflow automation tool that lets you easily automate the operation of any AppleScriptable application. While Automator can control many applications right out of the box, it lacks the ability to automate Photoshop. For Photoshop control, you need The Photoshop Action Pack, which provides everything necessary to drive Photoshop CS, CS2 and CS3 using Automator. This update, for Photoshop CS3 only, provides a couple of important bug fixes as well as 1 new action. |

Features: Gear for the Road

Because different types of shoots require different types of gear - long lenses for an event shoot, wide lenses for landscape, etc. - figuring out how to pack your camera bag for a particular assignment or event can be tricky. But lens and camera selection is just one thing. You'll also want to consider some other important factors.

If you shoot with a digital SLR, you will eventually have a problem with sensor dust. Even if you never take your lens off the camera, all D-SLRs are susceptible to the problem of dust on the sensor. So what can you do? Fortunately, there are a few new products out there that can help you with your sensor cleaning chores. |
