I have been involved with Salesforce for the past nineteen years, and I have actively been involved with helping people solve problems in the public space of Q&A sites for the past seventeen years, including nearly eleven years here on the Salesforce Stack Exchange. Aside from that, I've made thousands of reviews and over ten thousand edits. I previously declined an opportunity to be a moderator, feeling that I was already doing the most good by actively answering questions. Lately, the network seems like it could use my help, and I'm here to offer it.
Questionnaire
- How would you deal with a user who produced a steady stream of valuable answers, but tends to generate a large number of arguments/flags from comments?
I would open a line of communication to the user, to try and resolve any problem in a private setting. Oftentimes, users don't even realize they are a problem, even when called out by random comments. I would work to try and resolve the problem without letting feel like they are under attack.
- How would you handle a situation where another mod closed/deleted/etc. a question that you feel shouldn’t have been?
Edge cases usually end up in meta. I would bring the discussion to meta and take appropriate action based on community feedback. The network belongs to all of us, and we should all be treated fairly.
- In your opinion, what do moderators do?
Moderators, as I understand it, have four primary functions. First, they are here to help resolve disputes quietly, and make sure that everyone who is genuinely trying to contribute to the network feel they are treated fairly. Second, they help keep maintain the professional behavior that is expected on this website. Third, they are there to resolve issues that even high-ranking trusted members cannot, such as fixing vandalism, spam, trouble users, and so on. They also act as advocates for the users of the network regarding changes to the overall network.
- A diamond will be attached to everything you say and have said in the past, including questions, answers and comments. Everything you will do will be seen under a different light. How do you feel about that?
While I can't say that every comment has always been viewed in the most favorable light, I can say that I'm quite comfortable with the fact that I am human, and made mistakes, although I have overall been a positive influence on many people.
- In what way do you feel that being a moderator will make you more effective as opposed to simply reaching enough reputation to access moderator tools or become a trusted user?
Throughout my time here, I've raised a number of flags on many questions. I have always erred on the side of caution, having access to more badge permissions than anyone else on the network that I'm aware of. I've always used my permissions cautiously, and I feel I would be more efficient in helping the network if I were a moderator.
