Front Cover: Ladies welcoming noblemen to a castle. Wallpainting from the first half of the fourteenth century in the church of Ørslev near Skælskør, Sjælland, Denmark. The painting forms part of a series of courtly scenes whose exact significance in the context of the decoration of the church has not yet been adequately explained. One of the more plausible suggestions is that the scenes were painted in connection with the celebration of a noble marriage. Reprinted with permission of the photographer, Kimberly Willingham.
