The PSF has co-signed the “Open Infrastructure is Not Free” joint statement

The PSF is proud to join the OpenSSF and other organizations in signing the “Open Infrastructure Is Not Free: a Joint Statement on Sustainable Stewarding”, adding our voice to a growing coalition calling for sustainable stewardship of the infrastructure the world depends on. Massive public services like PyPI should not be built solely upon volunteers and unpaid weekends: We believe that corporations benefiting most should help ensure their longevity. Let’s shift from goodwill to shared responsibility, so Python’s essential infrastructure stays strong, secure, and open for everyone. Beyond infrastructure, crucial support of the Python community is also in the balance– such as the PSF’s Grants Program (read more about the program’s pause in the “PSF Updates” section below).

So, what can you do to help us gain sponsors to ensure critical infrastructure, our community, and more can stay supported and sustainable?

If your company is using Python to build its products and services, check to see if they already sponsor the PSF on our Sponsors page.
If not, reach out to your organization's internal decision-makers and impress on them just how important it is for us to power the future of Python together, and send them our sponsor prospectus.
Point out the various benefits they will receive from sponsoring the PSF. Mention that PyCon US 2026 is coming up next spring, where they can connect with the community, recruit, and understand the current direction of the Python language!
Remind them to reach out to sponsors@python.org if they have any questions or would like a walk-through of our sponsorship program.

Engineering and Development Updates

Pypistats.org is Now Operated by the PSF

The PSF has officially taken over the operation of pypistats.org, which had been run by volunteer Christopher Flynn for over six years. The PSF’s Infrastructure Team now handles the service’s infrastructure, costs, and domain registration– and the service itself remains open source and community-maintained. We are appreciative that Christopher has stated his intention to stay on as maintainer of the project, and we welcome the community to get involved!

Unmasking Phantom Dependencies with Software Bill-of-Materials as Ecosystem Neutral Metadata

In a new white paper co-authored by the PSF’s Security Developer-in-Residence, Seth Larson, and Alpha-Omega, the concept of phantom dependencies is tackled via the adoption of Software Bill-of-Materials (SBOMs) and the new PEP 770. The paper outlines how these tools help make Python package dependency graphs more transparent and verifiable, enhancing the accuracy of security scans, compliance, and policy enforcement in complex environments. Auditwheel has merged support for generating PEP 770 SBOM data automatically and will be available in the next release. Critical projects, including NumPy, pip, and Cryptography, are already evaluating adopting PEP 770 and providing cross-ecosystem dependency information through the use of SBOMs.

PyPI Updates

The big news for PyPI this quarter is that PyPI now has built-in automation to detect email domains expiring to prevent domain resurrection attacks. This class of attack has little to do with PyPI infrastructure; rather, when an email domain used for account signup has expired, another person can register that domain and impersonate the identity previously used from that email domain.

There have also been multiple phishing attacks against PyPI project owners, where emails sent to maintainers appear to be from PyPI, and the links in the email appear to be legitimate, but send the browser to a proxy that captures credentials. This is a good reminder to prefer phishing-resistant second factor methods like WebAuthn where possible.

Supply chain attacks are increasing, and one such attack targeted users of GitHub Actions and long-lived PyPI API Tokens. We recommend replacing API Tokens with Trusted Publishers whenever possible to limit the scope and window of exposure.

Announcing the 2025 PSF Board Election Results

We’re excited to share the results of the 2025 PSF Board Election! 🎉 Congratulations to Abigail Dogbe, Jannis Leidel, Sheena O’Connell, and Simon Willison on being elected. A big thank you to everyone who voted (683 of you!).

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing board members. Kushal Das has been serving on the PSF Board for over ten years– WOW! Kushal has been a part of change after change for the PSF and Python community, serving in PSF Board officer positions, and we are incredibly grateful for his contributions. Dawn Wages quickly became an integral part of the Board during her tenure, stepping up as Treasurer and then Board Chair. Dawn helped guide us through a period of major change– navigating a difficult economy, adapting to the rise of AI, and supporting important shifts in our programs. Thank you, Kushal and Dawn, for your leadership and dedication to the PSF and the Python community. You will be missed and are deeply appreciated!

We’re excited to share the results of the 2024 Python Developer Survey! With input from over 30,000 developers across nearly 200 countries, the survey gives a detailed look at how Python is being used around the world, from frameworks and cloud adoption to tooling, versions, and demographics. We would love to hear about what you learn by digging into the numbers! PSF D&I Survey

Help the PSF D&I Workgroup understand your perspective, your experience in the Python community, and your impression of representation in the PSF by filling out the Diversity & Inclusion Awareness survey! The D&I Workgroup will use your responses to work on improving diversity and inclusion within the PSF and the community based on the charter of the D&I WG.

PSF Updates

The PSF has paused our Grants Program

As of August 1, 2025, the PSF paused our Grants Program after reaching our 2025 budget cap sooner than expected. Grants applications submitted and in process before the pause were awarded a proportional fraction of the eligible funds they requested. We know how important this program is to many in our community, and making this decision was difficult. This was a necessary step to protect both the future of the program and the short- and long-term sustainability of the PSF. We welcome feedback about the pause and the future of the program via:

Welcome, Kelly!

We’re excited to welcome Kelly Ragland to the PSF Accounting Team as our new Finance Manager! Kelly joins us with over a decade of experience in higher education, most recently managing research operations and budgets at the Colorado School of Mines. A lifelong Colorado native, she lives high in the mountains at 9,000 feet, where she embraces the alpine lifestyle and enjoys winter most of all. When she’s not crunching numbers, Kelly volunteers as a youth sports coach and supports her local school community—helping young athletes grow their skills and teamwork. We’re thrilled to add Kelly’s expertise and energy to the PSF!
