Gather Mailchimp mailing list subscribers via the Mailchimp block.
Place the Mailchimp Block inside a post or page to collect your viewers’ email addresses. You can position the block anywhere in your content, and catch readers when they are most inclined to sign up.
The Mailchimp Block is part of the Jetpack Blocks suite. Our Jetpack Blocks article explains the available blocks and how to activate them.
Jetpack Blocks require the Block Editor (also referred to as the Gutenberg editor). If you’ve installed the Classic Editor plugin, you will need to switch back to the Block Editor either by:
- Deactivating the Classic Editor: Go to Plugins → Installed Plugins in your WP Admin and deactivate the Classic Editor plugin.
- Enabling both editors: If you prefer flexibility, navigate to Settings → Writing in your WP Admin. Set Allow users to switch editors to Yes.
See Using Blocks and the Classic Editor for more details.
It may happen that an editor that comes with a custom theme or plugin prevents you from using the Block Editor. In that case, please contact the respective plugin or theme author for further assistance.
Add and connect your site with Mailchimp
You can add the Mailchimp block by searching and/or selecting it from the Jetpack section of the block selector. You can recognize the block as its Mailchimp logo is green.
When you first add the Mailchimp block, you will need to connect your Mailchimp account. Here are the steps to do it:
- Click Set up Mailchimp form to begin.
- This will take you to the Settings → Writing section of your WP Admin.
- Click the Connect button in the Mailchimp section.
- Enter your Mailchimp username and password in the popup window to finish the connection process.
- Select the list to which new subscribers should be added. If you do not have any lists yet, Mailchimp has a guide on how to create them.
- If you added the block before connecting, you may need to click the Recheck Connection button inside the Mailchimp Block back in the Block Editor.
Mailchimp connection on Multiple Sites
If you have more than one site connected to your WordPress.com account, you only need to set up the Mailchimp connection once, which will work across all sites.
Similarly, disconnecting Mailchimp under any site will turn off Mailchimp across all sites on your account.
You can create a different list in Mailchimp for each site and then use the specific list in My Site → Marketing → Connections for a specific site.
Mailchimp double opt-in
The Jetpack Mailchimp block does not currently integrate with Mailchimp’s double opt-in settings. As a result, the following message is displayed in the block:
“By clicking submit, you agree to share your email address with the site owner and Mailchimp to receive marketing, updates, and other emails from the site owner. Use the unsubscribe link in those emails to opt-out at any time.”
Alternatively, you can craft a form directly on the Mailchimp website and then embed it onto a page, post, block, or widget on your website. Check our Miscellaneous shortcodes for the necessary shortcode for Mailchimp.
Customize the Mailchimp block
Every block has specific options in the editor sidebar, and options can be found in the block toolbar. If you do not see the sidebar, click the Settings icon (looks like a menu) next to the Publish button.
The editor sidebar has two settings sections: the main settings (with the cog icon) and the styles settings (with a bi-color round icon).
Style settings in the Block editor
You can define the text background and color of your block via the style settings options, as well as the border and width settings of the submit button. You can also customize the entire block’s color and dimensions, managing the padding and the margin.
General settings in the Block editor
You can customize the default messaging of the block and add other options via the general settings under the cog (wheel) icon.
Text Elements
- Email Placeholder: change the text shown inside the email field. It disappears once the field is typed in.
- Notifications: there are three messages related to the function of the form that you can modify:
- The Processing text message shows when an email is added to the list.
- The Success text is displayed when an email is successfully submitted.
- The Error text is shown when the email address was not submitted successfully.
Mailchimp Groups
If you’ve created groups of subscribers within your selected list, this is where you can choose which groups to add new signups to.
For example, if you have one signup form on a page about sports and another signup form on a different page about technology, you can create two groups in your Mailchimp list – one for each form. You can then configure each Mailchimp block to add people to the appropriate group based on which page they signed up on.
The groups’ list will only appear if you’ve already created groups in Mailchimp.
Signup Location Tracking
Define a custom tag and value to track the specific form each subscriber used to sign up.
For example, if you have two email signup forms on your site—one on the homepage and one after each post—you can use different Signup Field Values with the same Signup Field Tag. With these tags, you can refer to your subscriber list to see where your subscribers sign up: on your homepage or after your posts.
When setting this up, make sure to use the same value for the Signup Field Tag (the recommended value is SIGNUP
) and distinct values for Signup Field Value.
Lastly, you will need to complete this setup in your Mailchimp account. You can refer to this Mailchimp guide on how to set this up. Please note that the sections Get the embed code, Modify embed code and Test your form are irrelevant, so please skip them, since Jetpack takes care of adding a subscription form for you.
You need to make sure that the Signup Field Tag value set on your site is the same as the Field tag (SIGNUP
) set in Mailchimp.
Mailchimp Connection
This section has a link to the Marketing settings if you need to connect, disconnect, or change the list you are using.
Advanced
With the advanced tab, you can add a CSS class to your block, write custom CSS, and style the block as you see fit.
Block Toolbar customizations
Click on the block to display the block toolbar. You can manage the width options in its toolbar, whether you want to set it as normal, full width, or wide width.
Mailchimp popup
Thanks to the Mailchimp Subscriber Popup feature, you can use a popup to nudge your visitors to join your Mailchimp email list.
If you need help setting that up, please check this Mailchimp documentation page or contact Mailchimp support directly.
