All new studies on learning highlight several aspects that should be considered to better engage learners when designing a learning process:
Easy-to-grasp materials
Recognition / sense of achievement
1. Easy-to-grasp materials
At the moment, the learning content is structured into long courses ranging from 4 to 9 hours at once, which goes against the principle of "easy-to-grasp" materials. While courses do include modules, learners can only reach them by navigating through the course itself—there is no direct modular access that would promote learners to jump straight into manageable "learning chunks."
Additionally, many learners simply do not have 4–9 consecutive hours to dedicate. Best practices suggest microlearning: breaking content into short, standalone units (10–30 minutes) that are easy to access, review, and complete within a short timeframe.
Suggestion: Create a clear overview of modules outside the full course path.
Implement shorter standalone lessons with visible estimated times for completion.
Offer learning paths (e.g., “Complete this 20-minute track to learn X”) to make it less overwhelming.
2. Recognition / Sense of Achievement
Currently, after spending 4–9 hours on materials, the recognition or sense of achievement is minimal and mostly connected to GitHub—which doesn’t provide an engaging or motivating sense of progress.
Research on learner motivation suggests that visible, shareable recognition improves completion rates and long-term engagement. One proven method is digital badges or micro-credentials, which:
Serve as digital certificates showing the learner has gained a specific skill, completed a course, or achieved a milestone. Are portable, meaning they can be displayed on LinkedIn, CVs, or portfolios. Encourage progressive achievement—collecting multiple badges reinforces a sense of growth.
Suggestion: Introduce badges or certificates per module as well as full courses.
Ensure they follow open standards (like Open Badges) so learners can showcase them externally.
Provide learners with a “progress tracker” dashboard, visualizing their learning journey.
