Abstract:
Although there have been several analyses of academic paratexts in other fields, there has not been a study that considers extensively acknowledgements in English studies. This essay attempts to help fill this gap. In it spousal acknowledgements are emphasized, and an effort is made to offer an historical overview of male acknowledgement of female partners. Professional and clerical acknowledgements, as well as female acknowledgements of male partners, are also discussed. Strategies for renewing the form and content of acknowledgements are suggested.
