Database Management for HeatWave and External MySQL
As a Database Administrator, you can use the Diagnostics & Management
features in the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
Database Management service to monitor HeatWave and External MySQL
DB systems.
Database Management supports:
HeatWave DB systems and clusters: DB systems and attached
HeatWave clusters in the HeatWave service, which is a fully managed Oracle Cloud Infrastructure native service. Database Management is automatically enabled for new HeatWave DB systems and can be
enabled in a single step for existing DB systems.
Database Management features for HeatWave DB systems are available as part of
the Full monitoring and Basic
monitoring options. By default, when Database Management is automatically enabled for a new HeatWave DB
system, Basic monitoring features are available at no
additional cost, however, you can choose the Full
monitoring option for advanced monitoring at an additional cost.
For more information on:
You can use Database Management for the following
HeatWave DB system configurations:
Standalone: A single instance DB
system.
High Availability: A three-instance DB
system that contains one primary instance and two secondary (standby)
instances, which guarantees if the primary instance fails, a standby
instance takes over, with zero data loss and minimal downtime.
Note
Although you can enable
and use Database Management for both Standalone and
High Availability DB system configurations, Database Management only monitors the primary instance in the DB system. For
example, if Database Management is enabled for a DB
system with secondary instances, it will only monitor and display metrics for
the primary instance in the DB system and the attached HeatWave cluster, if any,
and not for the other instances.
External MySQL DB systems: DB systems deployed on premises and
connected to a resource in the Database Management service.
Using Database Management, you can create an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure resource that represents the
External MySQL DB system within your tenancy, connect to it using a connector
resource, and monitor it in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Database Management support for External MySQL DB systems
is available through a non-metered subscription. For information, see Subscription for External MySQL DB System Support.
For External MySQL DB systems, Database Management supports version 8.x and later.
Currently, only Linux-based External MySQL DB systems are supported.
Note
To ensure consistency in
terminology, "DB systems" is used across Database Management for HeatWave and External MySQL documentation. For
External MySQL DB systems, it denotes the MySQL server instances, which contain
one or more MySQL databases.
Database Management for HeatWave and External MySQL
DB systems provides performance monitoring and diagnostic capabilities, which simplify
the detection of performance issues and ensure a quick resolution of performance
bottlenecks. It also provides performance management capabilities to proactively
identify the root cause of SQL performance issues. Here are some of the important tasks
you can perform using Database Management:
Monitor the key performance and configuration metrics of your fleet of
HeatWave and External MySQL DB systems.
Monitor the metrics and configuration variables of a single HeatWave or
External MySQL DB system.
Use Performance Hub to monitor and troubleshoot SQL performance.
Monitor the fleet of HeatWave clusters attached to HeatWave DB systems
and the metrics of a single HeatWave cluster.
Note
After an External MySQL DB system is registered in Database Management, you can also enable and use Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Ops Insights for the External MySQL DB system. For information,
see About Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Ops
Insights.
Subscription for External MySQL DB System Support
