The A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation's $219.5 million investment is the largest in University of Maryland history and ranks among the largest to a public research institution in the 21st century.

This transformative investment will propel UMD and the A. James Clark School of Engineering to the forefront of education and research worldwide by establishing and funding an array of scholarships and fellowships, professorships, and operational and capital projects.

A Significant Boost to University-Wide Need-Based Aid

The Foundation’s investment in the Clark Challenge for the Maryland Promise, a campus-wide matching program, aims to catalyze an equal amount of support from alumni and friends to ensure an education for students with the greatest financial need. If fully matched, the program would double the number of need-based scholarships available to outstanding students in Maryland.

A. James Clark Scholars Program Launched in 2018

The A. James Clark Scholars Program is the Foundation’s signature academic program, combining engineering, business, leadership, and community service. At UMD, 40 high-performing engineering undergraduates will receive need-based scholarships, and, as part of their studies, seek to solve some of the greatest engineering challenges as participants in the National Academy of Engineering’s Grand Challenges Scholars Program.

This unprecedented investment will help expand the Clark Opportunity Transfer Scholarship Program. This program will provide need-based scholarships to 40 engineering majors transferring from Maryland community colleges as they work to complete their education.

Defining the Fields: Clark Distinguished Chairs

Clark Distinguished Chairs are renewable faculty positions that directly address engineering’s most critical research areas, such as additive and advanced manufacturing, autonomy and robotics, and energy and sustainability. These eight leaders will open new frontiers, creating a community of collaboration and excellence that gains momentum with each achievement in research and innovation.

Fostering Tomorrow’s Leaders: Clark Doctoral Fellows

The Clark Doctoral Fellows program substantially increases the A. These scholars have the potential to become tomorrow’s leaders and innovators, launching technology companies and spearheading lifesaving advances to improve society.
