‘Mirima Place for Talking’
About Us
“Together, we come to the place to keep Miriwoong alive by capturing, sharing and nurturing our language and culture. Together, we build a strong, proud and respectful community where our people have a sense of who they are and the land to which they belong.”
Located in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, the Mirima Dawang Woorlab-gerring Language and Culture Centre (MDWg) was established in the 1970s to preserve, analyse and record the language and culture of the Miriwoong and Gajirrabeng people, along with surrounding language groups.
Our main mission is to revitalise and strengthen the critically endangered Miriwoong language on Miriwoong Dawang (country).
Our Country
The land of the Miriwoong and Gajirrabeng people covers a wide area across the East Kimberley and Western Northern Territory. The regional centre of Kununurra is located in the western part of Miriwoong country. Miriwoong country extends west from Galjiba (Molly Springs) to Doolngayim (Argument Gap) in the east, and extends south to cover much of what is now Lake Argyle. Gajirrabeng country is located north-east of Kununurra in the Northern Territory, covering the northern parts of the Keep River area.
Things have changed greatly since this time and many Miriwoong and Gajirrabeng people were displaced from much of their Country. MDWg regularly visits outlying communities and the people living there, to share and connect Language, Culture and Country.
The name of the regional centre ‘Kununurra’ actually derives from the Miriwoong word Goonoonoorrang (alternatively Gananoorrang), which means ‘river’.
