CypherCon 2025

Practical Protocol Hacking: CypherCon 2024 Badge

Luciano Moretti

Last year, Luciano presented an overview of dissecting a custom device protocol.
This year he’s going practical, with an audience interactive guided reverse engineering of the CypherCon 2024 slot machine badge protocol.
We’ll walk through the process, from analyzing the device all the way to documenting it for implementation.  During the journey we’ll discuss what we expect to find, live capture data from badges, extract data from the captures, and write some basic documentation.

Importance: Protocols are all around us. Most IoT and embedded devices speak multiple protocols. Some are standard, well known, and documented. They often also have one or more hidden custom protocols.
