Partio is powerful library created by Pixar that greatly helps with the manipulation of particles data. Using it to write the particle data to disk instead of the default technique can speed up the IO operations by more than 50 times!

Then:

1. Compile Partio yourself using the command scons -j4. It can be found here.*

2. Edit your MakeFile to make the LIB_PARTIO_A_PATH variable point to the libpartio.a file your compiled earlier.
